Surprising SNAP Purchases You Can Make in the Midwest

In the wide swath of the country categorized by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as the Midwest, how and where you can use those benefits varies by state rules. And what you might buy depends on even more local tastes and regulations, too. From the Dakotas to Wisconsin, from Missouri to Michigan and Minnesota, residents will utilize their benefits differently.

Here are some interesting ways residents of the Midwest can take advantage of SNAP benefits.

Surprising Purchases You Can Make with SNAP on the West Coast

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which runs SNAP, stipulates how the money can be spent. It’s intended for foods such as fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, dairy, some snacks, bread and cereals. You can’t buy alcohol, tobacco, prepared meals, medicine, pet food, personal-care items or paper products using SNAP benefits.

While the rules seem clear, residents on the West Coast can use their SNAP benefits for more than staples at a traditional grocery store.

Here are six non-traditional ways to spend SNAP funds on the West Coast.

Did Your State Give Out Emergency SNAP Benefits in June?

Emergency allotments were authorized under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act to help address temporary food needs during the pandemic for SNAP households. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, EA amounts are equal to the maximum benefit for the household size, minus their monthly base benefit.

Currently, no COVID-19 waivers allowing the issuance of emergency allotments have been extended to any state for June 2022. However, eligible school children and children in childcare programs may receive temporary emergency food assistance (P-EBT) during the upcoming summer months.

Can You Really Receive a Free Tablet as a SNAP Recipient?

If you’ve heard rumors about free tablets being provided by the federal government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), don’t get your hopes up. While eligible households can receive deep discounts on tablets, there’s nothing on any official government website indicating that they’re free.

The ACP is a benefit program run by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that helps ensure households can afford the broadband they need for work, school, healthcare and more.

According to the ACP website, the program provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward internet service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands. Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer or tablet from participating providers if they contribute more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase price.

Nowhere does the ACP website mention a free tablet. However, eligible households can get a tablet with a contribution of as little as $10.01 … so it’s not too far off.

Florida Senator Proposes Revisions to SNAP Requirements for State

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) introduced legislation that would modify the requirements to receive federal benefits for welfare and SNAP. Named the “Let’s Get to Work Act of 2022,” the bill proposes changes to provisions in the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 and the Families First Coronavirus Response Act of 2021, WFLA News Channel 8 reports.

Scott proposes adding work requirements for SNAP recipients who are able-bodied and do not have dependents (ABAWD). WFLA News reported that under pandemic legislation, the age requirements for able-bodied adults to receive SNAP benefits allow those aged 50 or older to apply (lowered from age 60), even if they do not have dependents.

Scott’s proposed legislation would make these changes to SNAP eligibility:

  • End the current suspension of SNAP’s work requirements for ABAWDs.
  • Expand SNAP work requirements to able-bodied adults aged 50-59 and to parents of children over 6 years old (except for parents with children under the age of 6 and persons who care for incapacitated individuals).
  • End “no-good-cause” exemptions from the SNAP ABAWD work requirement that allows states to bypass SNAP work requirements.
  • Make improvements to work requirements by addressing the marriage penalty and increasing the grace period for parents:
    • One spouse would be exempt from work requirements if the other fulfills them.
    • Increase the “grace window” for those parents with dependents who fail to meet the work requirement from 3 months in a 3-year window to 6 months in 3 years to account for added household complexities.

SNAP 2022: Where Can You Spend Your Benefits This Summer?

Many of us take for granted that we can buy enough nutritious groceries with the income we generate and barely have to think twice. But for individuals and families living at or below the poverty line — which is $13,590 annually for an individual or $27,750 for a family of four — being able to afford basic essentials like food can be beyond their means.

With inflation driving costs up even higher, this can be a serious problem for individuals in need. The federal government helps these families out through a program called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP — formerly known as food stamps) through which people get funds on an electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card to pay for various food, drinks, and food-producing plants and seeds.

SNAP Beneficiaries May Qualify for $30+ Off Internet Access

Households who take part in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, federal public housing assistance, the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Program, WIC, veterans pension or survivor benefits — or Lifeline — may qualify for Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP).

The program was introduced by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). If you are qualified based on your income, you might be able to get $30 off your internet service.

Even if you don’t participate in these programs, but have a household income below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines, you may qualify. To enroll for ACP or see if you qualify, visit AffordableConnectivity.gov and submit an application online. You can also print out and mail the application. Then, contact your preferred participating internet provider to select an internet plan. The discount will be applied to your bill if you qualify for ACP.

How To Apply for SNAP and WIC (and the Difference Between Them)

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) are both federally-funded health and nutrition programs. Both programs help low-income families and their children but are discrete entities.

SNAP delivers a monthly preloaded EBT (electronic benefits) card to recipients, and this card is used to buy food for you or your family. When you see the EBT option at the grocery store, this signals that the store is participating in the SNAP benefits program. A predetermined amount is loaded onto your debit card based on your overall household income for this purpose.

On the other hand, WIC does not provide a discretionary amount to buy food items. WIC recipients are given a specific card, which is then swiped the same way a debit or credit card is, to purchase items from this list only. Foods are pre-determined, meaning that they are chosen based on nutritional values and USDA standards. Food items include, but are not limited, to infant cereal and other baby foods, fruits and vegetables, eggs, milk, cheese, peanut butter, dried and canned beans, canned fish and tofu.

Experts Divulge Shopping Tips for SNAP Beneficiaries

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal nutrition program that gives benefits to low-income individuals and families, enabling them to purchase food at retailers nationwide. Though the specific benefits vary from state to state, in general, to be eligible, a household’s income must be at or below 130 percent of the poverty line. For a family of three, that’s around $1,830 a month or less.

While SNAP benefits provide much needed food assistance, inflation is driving up the cost of groceries and services exorbitantly right now, impacting folks on SNAP benefits more than the average household.

When Will SNAP Payments Be Sent in July 2022?

SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, is the largest federal assistance program, providing food-purchasing assistance to low-income households. While it’s overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, SNAP is administered at the state level.

Payments are deposited monthly into SNAP accounts, which are linked to EBT cards. Some states have different names for EBT cards, so yours may be called something different.
