The U.S. Treasury issued three distinct stimulus payments during the COVID-19 pandemic. While they came with generous claiming windows, those time periods have now passed. Whether you never claimed your benefit or received a payment and failed to cash it, the legal windows to receive those funds have now closed.

Here’s a look at the timeline for expiration and what happened to the money that was never claimed.

Also see two economic scenarios that could trigger another wave of stimulus checks, according to economists.

Scenario 1: You Received a Check but Never Cashed It

If you received a stimulus check in the mail and did not cash it, the time to negotiate your U.S. Treasury check has expired. The U.S. Treasury stated that its checks generally must be cashed within one year, with the notification stamped on the check itself.

If your check is expired, or if it was lost or destroyed, you can’t cash it. However, there’s a chance that you could request a replacement. The IRS provides specific instructions as to how to request a government check that is expired, lost or destroyed. However, there’s no indication that the U.S. Treasury will extend the deadline for paying out expired stimulus checks.

Scenario 2: You Never Claimed Your Stimulus Money

If you neglected to claim your stimulus money in the first place, the process is different. However, the deadlines for this route have long since expired as well.

Previously, if you did not yet claim your stimulus money, the IRS would direct you to complete the Recovery Rebate Credit section on your tax return. Here were the IRS filing deadlines under this process:

  • 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit (first/second stimulus): You must have filed your 2020 tax return no later than May 17, 2024.
  • 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit (third stimulus): The cutoff date for claiming this stimulus payment on your 2021 tax return was April 15, 2025.

What Happens to Unclaimed Funds

Per government guidelines, if a U.S. Treasury check expires uncashed, the payment is automatically canceled and the funds go back to the issuing office. Essentially, regardless of how it happens, unclaimed funds issued or authorized by the U.S. government remit to the U.S. Treasury.

Both the one-year window to cash a Treasury check and the multiyear tax filing deadlines to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit have now passed. However, if you want to track if you were issued a payment, you can visit your IRS online account and use the refund-trace procedures to at least see if a check went missing.
