People tend to think the 1% do not pay their share of taxes, but GOBankingRates recently conducted a study to see just how much the very wealthy end up paying to the government.
Among the top four states in aggregate tax totals were Florida and New York, where the top 1% pay over $50 billion. California is the top at $122 billion, and Texas is third at $81 billion. The richest Florida residents combine to pay $96 billion and the super wealthy in New York hand over $79 billion. They are the top two states on the East Coast.

Methodology: For this study, GOBankingRates analyzed individual tax returns by state to find out how much the top 1% pay in taxes. Using data from the IRS SOI tax stats, the individual tax rates by income percentiles and by state were included. All data was collected on and is up to date as of March 6, 2025.
