Inflation may be starting to cool down, but many retirees are still living on tight budgets and trying to find ways to get the most out of their retirement income.

America’s 50 Most Expensive Retirement Towns

One way to potentially stretch your dollar further is by scouring Amazon for good deals on everyday products that can make your life a little easier and sometimes even save you money.

“Navigating Amazon for budget-friendly yet essential items can be a game changer for those on a fixed income,” said Dan Dillon, the founder and chairman of Clean It Supply.

That said, you want to be careful about falling into the trap of buying unnecessary items while online shopping. Rather than buying impulsively, consider the following expert recommendations from Dillon, along with Brandy Burch, the founder and CEO of Benefitbay.

Here are the 10 things our experts say you should buy on Amazon while on a retirement budget, all of which are useful to have around your home, for chores big and small.

Reusable Grocery Bags

  • Price: $21.99

This 8-pack of reusable (and washable) bags has 4.7 stars on Amazon and costs just under $22, making each bag only $2.75.

Dillon recommended scoring these on Amazon, as some grocery stores will offer discounts for bringing your own bag, leading to potential savings in the future. Better yet, this product supports a healthy environment.

LED Light Bulbs

  • Price: $9.95

Prices can vary quite a bit based on the type of LED light bulb, pack size and other factors; but, in general, you can often get your money’s worth over time due to the energy savings of these bulbs compared to incandescent ones.

“Energy-efficient and long-lasting, these can significantly reduce electricity bills,” Dillon said. “A pack of four might cost around $10 to $12, providing savings in the long run.”

Specifically, the 9-watt, cool white bulbs from Great Eagle come in a pack of 4 and are under $10.

High-Efficiency Air Filters

  • Price: $26.99

Here too, prices can vary quite a bit based on factors like filter size; but, like LED light bulbs, you could save big money in the long run. Currently, you can find an 8-pack of high-efficiency filters under $30.

“These filters can improve air quality while being cost effective in the long term by reducing HVAC system strain,” Dillon said.

Food Safe Baking Mat

  • Price: $12.99

Amazon Basics has a silicone, non-stick baking mat, and the best part is that you get two in one pack at an affordable price.

“For retirees who love to bake, these non-stick mats are a game changer,” Burch said. “Reusable, easy to clean and eliminating the need for baking spray, parchment paper or aluminum foil, they’re an eco-friendly choice that pays for itself.”

Multipurpose Microfiber Cloths

  • Price: $15.99

Another reusable product that can save you money is a microfiber cloth.

“These are ideal for cleaning and reduce the need for disposable paper towels,” Dillon said, “offering savings and environmental benefits.”

This 50-pack of multipurpose cloths from Amazon is only $15.99, making each one just 32 cents.

  • Price: $21.99

Burch had only the best things to say about this Hamilton Beach 6-Speed gem of a baking tool.

“This mixer is not only budget-friendly, but its compact size and easy storage case make it perfect for smaller or downsizing kitchens,” Burch said. “The variety of speeds and included attachments ensure versatility without breaking the bank.”

Handheld Vacuum

  • Price: $50.67

Burch called this Amazon buy a good deal because “keeping a clean home shouldn’t be strenuous.”

According to her, this lightweight, cordless handheld vacuum is perfect for quick cleanups, easy to maneuver and has a lithium battery that holds a charge for up to 18 months.

Programmable Thermostat

  • Price: $57.93

Another way to potentially save money and help the environment is to use a programmable thermostat, like this one from Honeywell, which you can use to set schedules.

Dillon noted how this thermostat helps manage heating and cooling more efficiently, trimming high energy bills.

  • Price: $119.95

“Ideal for those experiencing sleep issues or mood swings, this therapy lamp mimics sunlight to improve sleep, mood and energy,” said Burch.

If you find yourself suffering from similar issues, this product could be worth the higher price tag.

Final Take To GO

“While I believe in the practicality and value of each of these products, it’s essential to consider personal needs and preferences when making a purchase,” Burch said.

“These items represent what I see as a strong mix of utility, value and enhanced daily living for those managing a fixed-income or retirement budget.”

Dillon agreed, adding, “Each of these items was selected for their practicality, cost-saving potential and high utility for retirees. While prices on Amazon fluctuate due to various factors, these ballpark figures serve as a guide to what retirees should consider adding to their shopping carts.”
