According to Newsweek, citing Coresight Research and Time Out, the U.S. saw 7,325 store closures in 2024. This year, the number is set to nearly double, with an estimated 15,000 stores closing their doors. And retailer Macy’s is not immune.

2025 is the year that Macy’s will bid farewell to a number of its stores. According to a January 2025 press release, 66 Macy’s locations will be shut down this year as part of its strategy to return to more profitable and sustainable sales growth.

This massive reduction in brick-and-mortar stores “will simply cause customers to search for new places to shop for their desired products,” said Jeanel Alvarado, founder and CEO of Retailboss. “Most department stores rely on customers to return to replenish items they run out of … However, with the convenience of online shopping and the rise in [direct-to-consumer], many shoppers are already getting their items from alternative sources such as Amazon.”

For those Macy’s customers in need of another outlet to get their retail fix on in the wake of these closures, here are five great alternatives to shop.

Nordstrom

For a similar shopping experience, you could try Nordstrom.

Maria Zhang, founder of Pearly Ocean, a premier retail e-commerce brand specializing in high-quality pearl jewelry, explained that Nordstrom “has long been considered one of the premier department stores, carrying a mix of high-end and affordable brands and providing excellent customer service.”

“Nordstrom is the next best alternative for those accustomed to a fine cocktail of luxury brands combined with private-label fashion at Macy’s,” said Julia Pukhalskaia, a fashion stylist and CEO of Mermaid Way. “The store has, besides the luxury and mid-tier brands, everything Macy’s has in service toward fulfillment, which has long been the mainstay of their customer service journey.”

Kohl’s

If you are looking for a cheaper alternative for buying department store goods, Zhang recommended Kohl’s. She said it “comes with an excellent and quite unique rewards program [and it’s] great for day-to-day fashion and house essentials.”

“Kohl’s is an excellent alternative for shoppers on a budget, often running promotions, providing cashback rewards through Kohl’s Cash, and broadening its assortment in activewear, casual fashion and home,” Pukhalskaia said.

Dillard’s

According to Zhang, Dillard’s is a “reasonable alternative for those who tend to like shopping in department stores, offering apparel, accessories and home goods of pretty good quality.”

Alvarado pointed out that Dillard’s has many of the same brands of affordable essentials and everyday home goods that shoppers of Macy’s, as well as Kohl’s, have come to know and love.

Target

Target is becoming more and more relevant in the fashion space, especially since it upgraded its credibility, in Pukhalskaia’s professional opinion.

She explained that Target’s designer collaborations with Christopher John Rogers as well as through Future Collective, for example, provide apparel and lifestyle goods that are both thoughtfully stylish and reasonably priced.

Specialty Online Retailers and Independent Brands

Another option is specialty and independent retailers. “Consumers nowadays tend to shop more from online brands that focus on craftsmanship and direct-to-consumer pricing,” Zhang said.

She added that in the jewelry sector, customers who once bought pearls at Macy’s, for example, are now shopping more at independent brands like her own.
