Dollar Tree has long been known as the go-to spot for great deals. For years, shoppers could stock up on essentials like cleaning supplies, home goods and kitchen essentials — all at rock-bottom prices.
However, the surprising addition of $20 items to the store’s inventory could mark a change in how Dollar Tree operates, as well as in how you shop.
Price Increases at Dollar Tree
It’s no secret that Dollar Tree has been gradually raising their prices for years. In 2021, CNN reported Dollar Tree would raise prices on most of its merchandise to $1.25 by May 2022. Gone were the days of nearly everything in the store being $1, but given the effects of inflation, the price increase was understandable. Plus, the cost increase was minimal enough that most shoppers could absorb it without much financial strain.
The retailer has recently expanded into some higher-priced items. It’s now common to see items, particularly home and seasonal decor, ranging from $3 to $7. While these items aren’t quite the bargain that shoppers are used to finding, they’re still affordable, and the majority of the store’s inventory remains a good deal.
Surprising New $20 Dollar Tree Prices
If you’ve shopped the Dollar Tree website or stopped into your local store lately, you might have seen $20 items, such as the Halloween LED Inflatable Decorations. A $20 item is in an entirely different price range than the majority of Dollar Tree items, so it’s surprising to find.
Even more surprising is the fact that these items appear to be marked up by 50%. According to 1420 WBSM, the inflatables feature hand-written stickers. Removing the stickers reveals that the inflatables’ manufacturer originally priced the items at $10, and Dollar Tree appears to be increasing the prices even further.
What the $20 Dollar Tree Prices Mean for Shoppers
One of the greatest perks of shopping at Dollar Tree was that, for years, it was simple. You knew that you could afford any item you picked up, and add up the total of your merchandise before you got to the counter. There was no price comparing and weighing whether an item was worth it or not.
Dollar Tree is changing that with the introduction of these $20 items. Suddenly, you have to check prices as you shop, and if you’re on a tight budget, there will now be items in the store that you can’t afford. If Dollar Tree expands its offering of $20 items, it will lose the appeal it once had. Instead of being the go-to spot for bargains and affordable shopping, Dollar Tree risks becoming just another retail store.
Alternatives to Dollar Tree
With Dollar Tree prices climbing, you might seek out some alternatives. Five Below offers a selection of items for $5 or less. If you’re looking for good deals on groceries, Aldi, a discount supermarket chain, often has prices that are lower than those at your local grocery store. Big box retailers like Walmart can be a good option for deals, too, especially if you shop their sales or browse their clearance section, which is often located in a back corner of the store.
