According to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis’ most recent data, the average retiree (age 65 and up) spends $61,432 a year. That’s about $5,119 a month.

That kind of money can go a long way when shopping at budget-friendly retailers like Walmart. But it’s still easy to overspend, or to buy things that ultimately prove unnecessary.

GOBankingRates perused Walmart’s catalog to select some items responsible retirees (whether they’re on a budget or not) should consider getting ahead of the new year.

AARP found that the average adult (ages 50 and up) travels three to four times a year. For those who need to keep track of their medications while out and about, this portable pill organizer is perfect. It’s got 10 compartments, comes in a handy case and has labels to keep everything straight.
