The Cost to Own 2020’s New and Redesigned Cars, Trucks and SUVs

If you’re thinking about buying a car, you’ll have plenty of new options as the 2020 models start rolling out. Some classic models like the Porsche 911 have been heavily upgraded, while other automakers have rolled out entirely new vehicles, like the Cadillac XT6.

Whether you’re looking for cheap new cars or want to splurge on a luxury vehicle, you can find something to fit your wants (and budget) among the new cars for 2020.

• Starting price: $86,450

BMW’s flagship sedan got a face-lift for the 2020 model, with a new grille design that’s 40% larger than 2019’s. It also has slimmer 3D LED headlights, redesigned chrome surrounding the exhaust tips and more defined contour lines on the hood and sides. The 7 Series’ tech amenities include an Intelligent Personal Assistant that can help you find local dining options and more, as well as a wireless charging pad for smartphones. There’s also a rear-seat entertainment system, with a Blu-ray disc player and 10-inch HD screens mounted to the back of the front seats.

• Starting price: $65,690

The 2020 BMW Z4 M40i has an engine boasting 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, CNET reported. And the sporty drop-top car features a front engine and rear drive, according to Motor Trend.

• Starting price: Estimated $50,000 to $60,000

The Cadillac XT6 is a new addition to GM’s luxury line. The three-row crossover vehicle is positioned between the XT5 and the Escalade and will be offered in Premium Luxury and Sport models. Both models come standard with a 14-speaker Bose Performance Series sound system and a heated steering wheel. The XT6 also comes equipped with numerous driver assists including forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and lane-change alert, and front and rear park assist. The Premium Luxury model is distinguished by a sleeker exterior and wood accents on the interior, plus front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive are available, while the Sport comes with all-wheel drive only.

• Starting price: $34,100

The 2020 Chevy Silverado HD is larger than the 2019 version in almost every dimension, with a larger Standard Box and higher hood height. The new model also features a larger grille and a prominent hood scoop on diesel models, both of which will help with cooling during trailering. The truck also has an available Advanced Trailering System, which offers up to 15 unique camera views. The 2020 model will be available in five trim levels: Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ and High Country. 

• Starting price: Estimated $24,885

The 2020 Ford Escape will be the fourth generation of the compact crossover SUV, which comes with a roomier interior than previous generations and the Ford Co-Pilot360 safety suite standard. It also features a redesigned, more aerodynamic exterior. Available high-tech features include Ford Pass Connect with 4G LTE Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay, Ford + Alexa and Waze, as well as Active Park Assist 2.0.

• Starting price: $32,765

Ford’s 2020 Explorer will be the sixth generation of the three-row midsize SUV. The new model comes with two engine choices, both with 10-speed automatic transmission, and a new hybrid model is available. It also comes equipped with the Co-Pilot360 suite of safety and driving-assist features, which include emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and pedestrian detection. The 2020 Ford Explorer also has many tech features standard, including 4G LTE that can provide Wi-Fi for up to 10 mobile devices, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The GMC Sierra HD is fully updated for 2020. The heavy-duty pickup truck is larger, longer and taller than the current model, and also boasts a spacious interior. Another perk: It has an advanced camera system that will allow for 15 different views.

The Hyundai Palisade is one of the brand new cars for 2020, and it’s the automaker’s biggest SUV to date. The three-row crossover has seating for up to eight and a V6 engine comes standard. The Palisade has four driving modes — Comfort, Sport, Eco and the default Smart mode — to suit different driving needs. The SUV also offers premium amenities, such as ventilated second-row seats and a Krell audiophile sound system. 

• Starting price: $39,900

Jaguar’s compact sports sedan has updated exterior, interior and infotainment options for 2020. The XE will come standard with 19-inch wheels, power leather seats, premium LED headlights and taillights, front and rear parking assistance, rear camera and lane-keeping assist. A 10-inch Touch Pro display is also standard in the new model. One significant change is that the XE will no longer come with options for Supercharged V6 gasoline or 4-cylinder diesel engines, which were available with 2019 models.

• Starting price: $33,545

Jeep is introducing its highly anticipated Gladiator for 2020. A cross between a Wrangler and a tow-truck, it’s the only open-air pickup truck in the industry. It offers best-in-class 7,650-pound towing and a versatile truck bed to make hauling gear as convenient as ever. It also has top-of-the-line features available, including an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Bluetooth wireless speaker and leather-trimmed seats. Choose between soft and hard top, and to really let nature in, you can remove all four doors.

• Starting price: $18,485

The 2020 Kia Soul is among the cheapest new cars of the year. The third generation of the SUV-inspired car will come in multiple trims for 2020. All models come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard, and the option for a 10.25-inch touchscreen. The highest-level trim, the GT-Line 1.6T, comes with numerous premium features, including a sunroof with power sunshade, LED interior lighting, a heated steering wheel and forward collision warning with pedestrian detection.

• Starting price: $31,600

The new Kia Telluride is a luxurious three-row SUV that seats up to eight and is available with front- or all-wheel drive. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard with the Telluride, which is also packed with safety and driver-assisted tech. The 2020 Telluride includes Kia’s Drive Wise suite, which contains collision warning and avoidance technology, lane-departure warning and assist, blind-spot collision avoidance, smart cruise control and a surround-view monitor to assist with parking. Optional tech upgrades include wireless phone charging and up to six USB ports. 

• Starting price: $51,100

Lincoln is introducing a new SUV, slotted between the Navigator and the Nautilus, for 2020. The Aviator is a midsize three-row SUV that will come in five trim levels, including the Grand Touring hybrid model. Although the exterior of the different trims is slightly different, the interiors all feature leather finishes, aluminum trim and open-pore wood accents. All models also come standard with the Lincoln Co-Pilot 360 Plus, which includes adaptive cruise control, emergency braking and automatic parking capabilities. A new perk with the Aviator is the ability to program your phone to function as a key. 

• Starting price: Estimated $34,095

Mercedes gave its compact four-door coupe a whole new design for 2020. The small and sporty CLA now has a sleeker look and more horsepower than the previous model. It also comes standard with the Mercedes-Benz User Experience “Interior Assistant,” which is voice-controlled and has learning capabilities. “MBUX” uses AI to allow you to control radio volume and other settings with hand and arm motions.

• Starting price: Estimated $70,000

The EQC 400 4Matic is Mercedes-Benz’s first EV SUV. Its pair of electric motors have a combined 402 horsepower, and its battery can last for up to 200 miles. The EQC’s high-tech interior features rose gold accents, 64-color ambient lighting, heated power front seats, a sliding sunroof and a 10.25-inch fully digital widescreen cockpit. As with the CLA, it comes standard with MBUX. 

• Starting price: Estimated $40,700

The GLC 300 is getting a refreshed exterior for 2020, with a new grille, redesigned front and rear fascias, and new headlamps and taillights. It’s updated with four-cylinder power, and the MBUX interface. Other standard features now include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, blind-spot assist, heated front seats, keyless start, dual-zone climate control and active brake assist. 

• Starting price: Estimated mid-$50,000

This is the fourth generation of Mercedes’ luxury midsize SUV, and the overhauled design comes with more interior cabin space. There are now three suspension options, an optional third-row seat package and available 4Matic fully-variable all-wheel drive. All GLEs come standard with the MBUX interface and navigation, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are also a number of safety features, including steering assist, blind-spot warnings and lane-change assist.

• Starting price: $114,250

Porsche has kept its design for the 911 Carrera S pretty much unchanged from the original in 1963, but the 2020 model includes upgrades in terms of its performance capabilities, with better sprinting, cornering and stopping. It features aluminum-intensive construction, an enhanced powertrain, and plenty of improvements to its technology and luxury amenities compared to previous models. The 2020 911 has high-res digital screens and a suite of driver assistance tech, including camera-assisted warnings and an automatic emergency braking system.

• Starting price: $43,645

The 2020 Range Rover Evoque keeps the previous model’s unique exterior design, plush interior and off-road capabilities, and adds advanced technology to the package. The Evoque now comes standard with driver assistance features that include lane-keeping assist, emergency braking and driver condition monitor. It also has a ClearSight Rear-View mirror that features an HD video screen with a wide field of vision thanks to a camera mounted on the rear window. In addition, the Evoque has two touchscreen 10-inch consoles in the center stack, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto coming standard.

• Starting price: $19,500

The Corolla has been totally redesigned for 2020, and now comes in a hybrid model. Its new two-liter, four-cylinder engine provides 169 horsepower, while the car retains the roominess, comfort and quiet it’s best known for. It also comes with a touchscreen in the center stack, and safety features that include a backup camera and brake assist.

• Starting price: $49,900

Toyota hasn’t introduced a new Supra sports coupe in 21 years, so fans of the model can get excited for its 2020 return. The fifth-generation Supra features rear-drive powered by a six-cylinder, 335 horsepower engine, and eight-speed automatic transmission. Inside the coupe’s two-passenger cockpit is an infotainment display with Apple CarPlay compatibility, and a 12-speaker JBL audio system. The Supra will be available in base and premium trims, and both will include keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and rain-sensing windshield wipers, plus a suite of high-tech safety features.

• Starting price: Estimated $25,295

Volkswagen’s midsize sedan has a bolder grille and a more coupe-inspired design for 2020. The new model has higher torque and more safety features standard than previous models, including blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. The latest Passat will also come standard with LED lighting, rain-sensing wipers, voice control and satellite radio.
