A new list by Realtor.com provides some suggestions to get you started. Here are six of our country’s quietest cities where you can buy a home for under $500,000.
Crestone, Colorado
With a median home price of $409,500, Crestone only just makes it on this list. It’s about 3 1/2 hours south of Denver — but this is far from the average small town.Â
Crestone was once a mining and ranching center. In recent years, it’s become a hub for Buddhists, Hindus and practitioners of similar ideas. If you have a similar philosophy, it could be perfect for you. It’s hard to imagine a quieter city than that.
Colorado is also a great state to call home. Its ski resorts are legendary, and the state hosts teams from all four major professional sports leagues. You’d have no problem finding a quiet place to enjoy this in Crestone.
Green Valley Lake, California
Green Valley Lake is up next, with a median listing price of $401,450. It’s located in the San Bernardino Mountains, 45 minutes from the city and 30 minutes from Big Bear Lake.
Big Bear is a mountainous area that’s perfect for nature lovers. The roads do get a bit windy, though, if that sort of thing bothers you.
If $401,450 doesn’t sound like your idea of a bargain — especially since you’ll be a bit removed from civilization — compare it with California’s median home price, $904,000. Suddenly, Green Valley Lake’s median price looks like a great deal.
For big cities, you’ll be a few hours away from both Los Angeles and Palm Springs. That’ll make it easy to get your fill of whatever you’re in the mood for.
Holly Lake Ranch, Texas
If you just don’t want to live anywhere but Texas, Holly Lake Ranch could be for you. It has a median listing price of $279,000. Its population of around 2,500 is more than that of some of the other cities on this list, but you still shouldn’t have a problem finding a quiet place.
You’d be about two hours from Dallas — close enough to catch a game every now and then. Or you can go east for two hours to get to Shreveport, Louisiana. Just make sure you’re ready for hot summers if you decide to call Holly Lake Ranch home.
Greenbackville, Virginia
Another option is moving to Greenbackville, Virginia. Its population is only 43, so your moving there could make a splash. Homes in Greenbackville have a median cost of $331,702.
Speaking of making a splash, you’d be right on the cusp of Chincoteague Bay — just south of the Virginia-Maryland border. It’s a great place for summer water activities, beach days and family vacations.
Lewiston, Michigan
Lewiston could be the right choice if you’d like to find a quiet place in the Midwest. Its population is under 1,000, and the median home price is just $249,900. That’s a hard price to beat in today’s market.
However, the area does have frigid winters — like most of Michigan. That could be a positive or a negative, depending on how you feel about the cold. But if you plan on staying in the Midwest anyway, you’ll likely have tough winters anywhere you go. However, summers in the area have a reputation for being very nice.
Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas
Finally, Horseshoe Bend is a town of about 2,500 with an average home price of just $139,900. If you’re trying to find quiet on a budget, it could be your best option. That’s the lowest price on the list.
There aren’t many things to do in Horseshoe Bend. But maybe that’s the way you like things. The area does have some great natural attractions. For example, you’d be close to Blanchard Springs Caverns — one of the most popular tourist attractions in the state.
