GOBankingRates defines “small town” as a place having between 500 and 15,000 households. The total population, population aged 65 and over and median household income were also sourced from the U.S. Census American Community Survey. The small town with the highest median household income was identified for each state. The livability index was sourced from AreaVibes for each city and included as supplemental information. The single-family home value was sourced from the Zillow Home Value Index. Data is up to date as of Oct. 14, 2025.
