St. Patrick’s Day might be one of the biggest days of the year in terms of celebrating, but it doesn’t fall under one of the nine trading holidays that the stock market closes. St. Patrick’s Day falls on Wednesday, March 17, and the stock market will be open for business as usual — though you might want to ease up on the festivities if you plan on making high-volume trades.

The short answer: No, the stock market is not closed on St. Patrick’s Day. It will operate during the normal trading hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST, so St. Patrick’s Day will not impact your ability to make trades.

When a federal holiday falls on Saturday — as Independence Day does this year — the stock market closes the preceding Friday. When a holiday falls on Sunday, the market closes the following Monday. The New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ observe the same holidays, though the bond market follows a slightly different schedule.

Judging by these schedules, bonds traders are at a slight disadvantage when it comes to trading because their market closes earlier more often.

What Other Days Does the Stock Market Close?

In addition to federal holidays, the stock market is closed on weekends. It might also close in the case of national events such as extreme weather or the death of a president. The most recent example of the latter is when the stock market closed on Dec. 5, 2018, following the death of President George H.W. Bush.
