Major college athletics is big business, with millions of dollarsĀ in ticket sales, merchandise and television rights flowing into Division I universities every year. But in recent years, more Americans have grappled with the increasingly difficult reality of how schools manage to generate all of that revenue.
Sure, the student-athletes attracting everyone to the games typically receive scholarships worth tens of thousands of dollars, and many of the universities making money off those same athletes are public, nonprofit institutions.Ā But this rationalization can only go so far when itās clear that the entire system remains dependent on the nationās finest young athletes essentially donating their labor ā work that, for some of the more elite competitors, would be worth millions on the open market.
So, which universities currently benefit the most from this system? Thatās what GOBankingRates sought to determine by digging into the budgets for the athletic departments of nearly 120 of the most prominent public colleges in the country. In many cases, these institutions are pulling down millions of dollars a year in profit after expenses ā all because they can recruit top talent and rely on them to perform unpaid work.

Methodology:Ā GOBankingRates used USA Todayās 2018 NCAA finances data to discover which Division I universities profit the most off their student-athletes. GOBankingRates looked at each universityās athletic departmentās (1) overall revenue and (2) overall expenses. Based on these two figures, GOBankingRates found each universityās (3) profits. GOBankingRates ranked the athletic departments from most to least profitable for the 2018 fiscal year. Only public universities were included as they are the only universities in the U.S. required to publish this data. All data was collected and is up to date as of May 4, 2020.
