Many Americans have a strong desire to earn money through their own business. Though, creating and growing your own business can be both challenging and rewarding at the same time.

A GOBankingRates survey based on 1,091 Americans aged 18 and older showed that 66% of respondents want to start a small business.

If you’re in the majority, you might be wondering how to start and get ahead in business. Financial expert Tony Robbins said in a blog post that sometimes, you actually need to slow down if you’re looking to succeed. “We don’t experience life; we experience the life we focus on,” Robbins explained.

Here are three ways to practice what Robbins is preaching.

Celebrate Your Wins

Reflecting on and celebrating your wins along the way is as important as the wins themselves. Robbins suggested picking three to five outcomes or results that you want to focus on most moving forward. From there, review your goals and take note of the things you may still need to work on. Recognizing your progress provides the fuel you need to keep going and reach new heights.

“Progress equals happiness,” Robbins said on this topic.

Shift Your Mindset

When you start to prioritize yourself and your overall well-being, business success usually follows. For example, exercising and getting enough sleep can both have positive impacts on your life. You’ll be able to think more clearly, your relationships can improve and you might even be able to reconnect with your passions.

“Learning to prioritize yourself is essential to true growth,” Robbins explained.

Measure Your Success

Goal setting is absolutely important, but it’s not enough to get ahead in business. Measuring your progress is crucial if you want to achieve success in your pursuits. Robbins explained that once you take the time to start measuring, you should notice progress more often, which should in turn fuel your desire to do more, be more, give more and create more.

Part of being able to measure your success is to slow down, anticipate challenges and allocate time and resources to your business.

“You cannot manage what you don’t measure,” Robbins added.
