Pay goes beyond just the number on the paycheck: It determines how much is left over after cost of living is paid for. Storeganise took a look at the average monthly wage for tech workers and subtracted the average cost of living for each state.

Here’s where tech workers are getting the most bang for their buck.

Washington

It pays to live in Washington and work in tech. Workers earn an average of $11,438 every month and get to keep $7,762 after paying for housing, food and bills. That’s a good chunk of change to have left over.

California

Not known for being cheap, it’s good that tech workers in Silicon Valley and beyond are keeping a good amount of their check in The Golden State. On average, tech workers are bringing home $11,856 a month. They do pay a good amount for cost-of living-expenses: $4,185.

But, that still leaves them with $7,671 for discretionary spending, which is not much less than Washington.

Maryland

Working in tech in Maryland will earn about $10,484 a month on average — the highest on the East Coast. After paying for essentials, those living in Maryland will keep $7,157 of that, which is enough to have a very comfortable lifestyle. 

Virginia

Virginia is a great choice for those looking to break into the tech market. Tech jobs pay workers in Virginia an average of $10,218 a month. After paying $3,371 in bills, tech workers will enjoy a leftover amount of $6,847.

Colorado

Colorado tech workers will get to keep $6,738 after paying for housing, utilities and average food costs. Each month, they’re bringing in an average of $10,186, which leaves plenty of money to spend on ski resorts and other outdoor activities the state is known for.

Delaware

Working the tech sector in Delaware pays $9,768 on average. Bills cost around $3,367, so that leaves tech workers in Delaware with $6,401 to spend on what they want.

Massachusetts

Being in Massachusetts and choosing a job in the tech field pays pretty well at $10,513 a month on average. Cost-of-living expenses will take $4,363 of that, so tech workers are left with $6,150 on average.

New Jersey

Living in New Jersey is not a bad choice for tech workers. They’ll bring in an average of $9,940 a month and get to keep $6,101 after paying $3,839 in necessary expenses.

North Carolina

Working in tech in North Carolina will earn a little over $9,100 on average. Cost-of-living expenses in the state come out to $3,163 on average, so that leaves about $6,000 to save or splurge.

Minnesota

Tech workers in Minnesota will earn $8,803 every month on average. To live and dine in The North Star State will cost just under $3,000, so tech workers can expect to have around $5,800 left to do what they please.
