Pro athletes are rich — but some are a whole lot richer than others. Obviously, the top-paid athlete on any given team is bringing home a whole lot more than the rookies. However, it might come as a surprise that the top-paid player on one team might earn three times — or more — as the top-paid player on a team in the same league.
Take Major League Baseball as an example. The New York Mets’ star veteran pitchers, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, are being paid more than $43 million – each – this season. Trevor May of the Oakland Athletics is playing on a $7 million contract, and the salary for Oakland’s entire 26-man roster is just shy of $59 million, according to data from Spotrac.
GOBankingRates searched for the highest-paid player on every MLB, NBA, and NFL team using salary data from Spotrac. Payroll salary is shown for MLB players. For NBA and NFL players, salary-cap allocation was used to determine the highest-paid players. Teams are listed in alphabetical order and by league.
NBA
The NBA season ends in June with the crowning of the league champion, but that doesn’t mean the NBA will go dormant until the fall when the 2023-24 season starts. Teams can begin signing free agents on July 6 and could be bringing a new highest-paid player into the fold.

NFL
NFL front offices do a daily dance as they figure out how to maneuver the salaries of 50-plus players into the league salary cap, which is set at $224.8 million for the 2023 season. It’s a delicate choreography that requires the team’s money staff to allocate a player’s base salary, options and bonuses into numbers that fit under the cap.

MLB
Baseball rewards the players with longevity. Players must have a certain amount of service time before they can sign the biggest-money contracts, which is why only seven players under age 30 have the highest adjusted salary on their teams. On the other 23 MLB teams, that distinction goes to players 30 and older.
