The club of quarterbacks who have made more than one Super Bowl appearance is quite exclusive. Only 21 signal-callers have reached the title game more than once.
Only 12 quarterbacks have won more than one Super Bowl title, and of those, only seven have won back-to-back crowns, including Tom Brady.
Brady’s opponent in this year’s Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes, is seeking to be the eighth to repeat.
Read on to see all the quarterbacks with multiple Super Bowl appearances.
Patrick Mahomes
- Super Bowl appearances: 2
- Super Bowls: LIV, LV
- Team: Kansas City Chiefs
Mahomes led the Chiefs over the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV, and he’s seeking to be the first repeat winner since … Tom Brady in Super Bowl XXXVIII and XXXIX in 2004-2005.
Russell Wilson
- Super Bowl appearances: 2
- Super Bowls: XLVIII, XLIX
- Team: Seattle Seahawks
Wilson brought the Seahawks oh-so-close to repeating before throwing an interception to Malcolm Butler at the goal line in the final minute against the Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX.
Len Dawson
- Super Bowl appearances: 2
- Super Bowls: I, IV
- Team: Kansas City Chiefs
Before Mahomes, Dawson was the chief Chief. After losing to Green Bay in the first Super Bowl, the Hall of Fame quarterback led Kansas City to its first title in Super Bowl IV, a 23-7 victory over Minnesota. Dawson also led the Chiefs to three American Football League Championships in the 1960s.
Joe Theismann
- Super Bowl appearances: 2
- Super Bowls: XVII, XVIII
- Team: Washington Redskins
Theismann led the Redskins to their first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XVII, beating the Dolphins 27-17. But his bid for a repeat fell short when the Los Angeles Raiders overwhelmed Washington 38-9 the next season.
Jim Plunkett
- Super Bowl appearances: 2
- Super Bowls: XV, XVIII
- Team: Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Raiders
Plunkett was something of a late bloomer in the NFL, winning his two Super Bowl titles in the latter half of his career. He started the 1980 season as a backup before taking over and leading the Raiders past the Eagles in Super Bowl XV. Plunkett was the backup again in 1983 before becoming the starter and taking Los Angeles to another crown.
Eli Manning
- Super Bowl appearances: 2
- Super Bowls: XLII, XLVI
- Team: New York Giants
Manning led the Giants past Tom Brady and the mighty New England Patriots in two different Super Bowls.
Craig Morton
- Super Bowl appearances: 2
- Super Bowls: V, XII
- Team: Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos
Morton was the first quarterback to take two different teams to Super Bowls, although he came up short in both. He also was succeeded by pretty big names: Roger Staubach in Dallas in 1973, and John Elway in Denver in 1983.
Brett Favre
- Super Bowl appearances: 2
- Super Bowls: XXXI, XXXII
- Team: Green Bay Packers
Favre led the Packers to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances, but he failed to repeat when he lost a shootout to John Elway and the Denver Broncos.
Bart Starr
- Super Bowl appearances: 2
- Super Bowls: I, II
- Team: Green Bay Packers
Starr led Green Bay to victories in the first two Super Bowls, and he also took the Packers to the 1965 National Football League championship, meaning he’s the only quarterback to lead his team to three consecutive titles.
Troy Aikman
- Super Bowl appearances: 3
- Super Bowls: XXVII, XXVIII, XXX
- Team: Dallas Cowboys
Aikman and the super-talented Cowboys beat the Bills for back-to-back titles, then returned with new coach Barry Switzer (who had been his college coach at Oklahoma for one season) to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Kurt Warner
- Super Bowl appearances: 3
- Super Bowls: XXXIV, XXXVI, XLIII
- Team: St. Louis Rams, Arizona Cardinals
Warner led the “Greatest Show on Turf” over the Tennessee Titans in 1999, then fell to Tom Brady and the Patriots in an upset two seasons later. Warner had a career resurgence with the Cardinals, coming up just short against the Pittsburgh Steelers in XLIII.
Fran Tarkenton
- Super Bowl appearances: 3
- Super Bowls: VIII, IX, XI
- Team: Minnesota Vikings
Before Jim Kelly and the Buffalo Bills lost four straight, Tarkenton and the Vikings set the standard for Super Bowl losses. Minnesota’s three defeats weren’t particularly close.
Bob Griese
- Super Bowl appearances: 3
- Super Bowls: VI, VII, VIII
- Team: Miami Dolphins
Griese was the first quarterback to lead a franchise to three consecutive Super Bowls, although he was injured for much of the first season before coming on to relieve Earl Morral in the playoffs. In the second season, Griese led the Dolphins to the only undefeated season in NFL history.
Ben Roethlisberger
- Super Bowl appearances: 3
- Super Bowls: XL, XLIII, XLV
- Team: Pittsburgh Steelers
Roethlisberger became the youngest quarterback in NFL history to win a Super Bowl. He was only 23 when he led the Steelers past the Seahawks 21-10 in Super Bowl XL.
Terry Bradshaw
- Super Bowl appearances: 4
- Super Bowls: IX, X, XIII, XIV
- Team: Pittsburgh Steelers
Bradshaw helped the Steelers win back-to-back titles twice. Interestingly, he had only four games where he passed for more than 300 yards, and two of them came in Super Bowls.
Roger Staubach
- Super Bowl appearances: 4
- Super Bowls: VI, X, XII, XIII
- Team: Dallas Cowboys
Staubach went 2-2 in his four Super Bowls. He is the first of four players to win both a Heisman Trophy and a Super Bowl MVP (Jim Plunkett, Marcus Allen and Desmond Howard are the others).
Peyton Manning
- Super Bowl appearances: 4
- Super Bowls: XLI, XLIV, XLVIII, L
- Team: Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos
Manning is the first quarterback to win Super Bowl titles with two different teams. He led the Colts over the Chicago Bears to win Super Bowl XLI, then capped his career when he and the Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers 24-10 in Super Bowl L.
Joe Montana
- Super Bowl appearances: 4
- Super Bowls: XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV
- Team: San Francisco 49ers
Known as “Joe Cool,” Montana was considered the GOAT before Brady came along. Montana was 4-0 in Super Bowls, winning close ones (a thrilling 20-16 comeback victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII) and blowouts (a 55-10 pasting of the Denver Broncos the next season).
Jim Kelly
- Super Bowl appearances: 4
- Super Bowls: XXV, XXVI, XXVII, XXVIII
- Team: Buffalo Bills
Only one quarterback has led his team to four consecutive Super Bowls: Kelly. Unfortunately, only one quarterback has lost four straight as well: Kelly.
John Elway
- Super Bowl appearances: 5
- Super Bowls: XXI, XXII, XXIV, XXXII, XXXIII
- Team: Denver Broncos
Elway’s Super Bowl history is a tale of two distinct eras. His first three Super Bowls were blowout losses, leading him to have a label of a player who “can’t win the big one.” Then Elway and Denver won back-to-back titles in Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII.
Tom Brady
- Super Bowl appearances: 10
- Super Bowls: XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLII, XLVI, XLIX, LI, LII, LIII, LV
- Team: New England Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Brady has a record six Super Bowl titles and about to be 10 appearances, cementing his status as the GOAT. He’s back with the Buccaneers to see if, at 43 years old, he can add to his legend.
