Finding an affordable car is an increasingly challenging task for American families. The average new-car price is $49,141 as of January 2026, according to Kelley Blue Book.

Finding a reliable car with a $40,000 budget may feel unattainable. Fortunately, some choices are still economically feasible. To get an idea of the top affordable family cars to buy in 2026, GOBankingRates asked ChatGPT for its recommendations. Here’s what it said.

Honda CR-V

ChatGPT recommended the Honda CR-V as one of the top choices for families. Compact SUVs are a good default for families seeking roominess without going too big.

“It offers a roomy interior, a comfortable ride, and enough cargo space to handle strollers, groceries and sports gear without feeling cramped,” ChatGPT said. The 2026 CR-V starts at $30,920.

Chevrolet Equinox

Chevrolet’s Equinox is a good alternative for families wanting a competitively priced SUV. The 2026 Equinox MSRP begins at $28,800, making it more affordable than the CR-V or Toyota’s RAV4.

ChatGPT noted that the Equinox’s price and its appearance on lists of top SUVs make it a suitable option.

Toyota Corolla

For families that don’t need an SUV, the Toyota Corolla is a classic option. The family sedan starts at $23,125 for the 2026 model, and it’s a good option for small families.

“[The Corolla is] dependable, efficient and usually easy on insurance/maintenance compared with bigger vehicles,” ChatGPT said. It added the Honda Civic as a good alternative.

Hyundai Palisade

For families seeking a three-row SUV with all-wheel drive or towing capability, ChatGPT recommended the Hyundai Palisade. The Palisade is pricier, beginning at $39,435 for a 2026 model.

Cost aside, the Palisade hybrid is Edmunds’ top-rated SUV. Families desiring a larger vehicle that isn’t a minivan may be happy with the Palisade.

Kia Carnival

The minivan is an American staple. ChatGPT listed the Kia Carnival as the top choice for families wanting a minivan. “[The Kia Carnival] is one of the better value plays in the segment,” ChatGPT said. Pricing begins at $37,390.

If cargo space is desirable, the Carnival may be a better choice than the Palisade. “Minivans usually beat three-row SUVs on sliding-door convenience and usable cargo behind the 3rd row,” ChatGPT said.

Ways To Save When Buying a Family Car

Identifying the right car is one part of the process. Saving money is equally important. ChatGPT encouraged shoppers to implement the following when car shopping:

  • Have a monthly budget in mind
  • Consider certified preowned to reduce costs
  • Analyze safety ratings
  • Avoid add-ons, if possible.

Add-ons can be particularly problematic. Base models are cheaper because they have fewer features. Going above that raises the cost. Worse yet, you likely won’t receive value for such packages when you trade it in, according to Edmunds.

Matching a car to your true needs and family size is necessary to save money in 2026. Performing adequate due diligence can go a long way to help you drive overall costs lower.
