The Bestselling Cars in Every State — and Your Cost To Own Them
Trucks are now the most popular type of vehicle across America.
Although there are some recurring favorites, for the most part, the bestselling cars in America vary greatly from state to state. Part of this is a reflection of the differing lifestyles across the country. In the Great Plains, for example, trucks are dominant, as they fit both the lifestyle of the region and its work requirements. In many other states, trucks are still popular but they also make way for compact and midsize SUVs, like the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4.

Some states popularize cars that fit in with the stereotypical lifestyle of the region. For example, in the outdoorsy Pacific Northwest, the Subaru Outback and the Subaru Forester crack the top five in Oregon and Washington, respectively. Yet, some vehicles are popular nearly everywhere. The Ford F-Series, for example, unsurprisingly ranks No. 1 in states like New Mexico, Texas and Nebraska, but it’s also first in Vermont and New Hampshire, among many other states.
To find the cost to own the most popular cars in each state, GOBankingRates referenced pricing and sales data from car-research site Edmunds. Overall, the most popular vehicles in each state generally run in the $28,000 to $32,000 range, but there are some notable exceptions. In California, for example, the best-selling automobile is the Honda Civic, with a starting MSRP of just $19,750. Of course, the second-most popular car in the state, the Tesla Model 3, has the highest starting MSRP on the list at $37,990.
Remember: 20 Questions You Should Always Ask the Dealer
Regardless of where you live, the vehicle you buy should be the one that best fits your needs while still remaining inside your budget. To help get the price down, try to shop at the time of the year when you have your best chance of scoring a good deal.
