Owning a car comes with a myriad of costs, from your monthly lease or loan payment — if you don’t purchase the car outright — to maintenance and repairs, auto insurance, fuel and, in some cities, parking costs.

Parking can add a significant sum to the total cost of car ownership. For instance, the price of monthly parking in New York City starts at $443, according to an analysis by car subscription service FINN.
Here are nine more U.S. cities with high parking costs:
- San Francisco: $300
- Seattle: $250
- Philadelphia: $250
- Washington D.C.: $225
- San Diego: $200
- Cleveland: $179
- Boston: $150
- Miami: $150
- Chicago: $143
You may think high parking costs relate to supply and demand in these cities. But, of the cities with high parking costs, only two (San Diego and Cleveland) also ranked in the bottom 10 for parking availability.
FINN rated San Diego as the overall worst place to park, with a high monthly cost of $200 to park in one of the city’s scarce parking lots. The lots you do find often lack wheelchair accessibility or EV charging capabilities.

Cities like San Antonio and Indianapolis provide relatively cheap parking, at $75 per month in both cities. But it won’t be easy to find a space and most parking garages lack EV chargers or wheelchair accessibility.
Fortunately, many U.S. cities with pricey parking and high traffic congestion also have robust public transportation options, such as New York’s subway trains, San Francisco’s “Muni” and Boston’s “T.” You can also easily walk to your destination in these pedestrian-friendly cities or ride an e-bike.
