9 Sedans That Last Longer Than You Think and Are Worth the Money

While many early examples had two doors, we typically use “sedan” to describe four-door, “three-box” (engine, cabin, trunk), fixed roof cars. However, with Americans continuing to choose the flexibility and space of crossovers and SUVs in record numbers, proportionally fewer sedans are seen on the roads every year.

Regardless of consumer trends, the following nine sedans still have a lot of life in them. Not only will they give you hundreds of thousands of miles of service, but they are all worth the money you’ll pay for them.

The Camry has an unmatched reputation for dependability, is a comfortable ride and gets excellent fuel efficiency. With 10 airbags, high-beam assist and Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.5+, the Camry is frequently rated as one of the safest and most dependable in its class.

It’s also a model that ranks high in customer satisfaction year after year, and can easily surpass 200,000 to 250,000 miles with very few problems.

Because of its reputation for dependability, safety and affordability, the Honda Accord has long been a popular choice among drivers of all ages and shows no signs of slowing down. The midsize sedan remains in great demand among those who do not want to make the switch to SUV (or EV) ownership.

What the Accord lacks in flash design, it makes up in sheer dependability. Honda ranks No. 1 out of 32 car brands for reliability, per RepairPal.

Thanks to its good looks and generous standard features, the Kia K5 is widely thought of as a legitimate rival to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, and makes “the idea of driving what’s traditionally been a ho-hum family car suddenly seems exciting,” according to Car and Driver.

Edmunds is on board, too, naming the K5 “simply the best car in its (midsize) class.”

Lexus offers three sedan models for 2024. A little costlier than the IS — and a lot cheaper than the LS — the Lexus ES is the model to target is you’re looking for reliability and value. The seventh version of the ES offers everything a daily driver would want at an affordable starting MSRP, especially for a “luxury” car.

Kelley Blue Book has awarded the ES a Best Buy Award five straight years in the past, and because it shares a platform with the Camry, you know they’ll last.

• Starting MSRP: $22,740

The Elantra is a reliable and reasonably priced sedan that more than makes up for its lack of power with its excellent fuel economy, appealing technology, roomy interior, excellent warranty and affordable pricing.

No brand has a better warranty than Hyundai, and the Elantra comes with the standard 10-year-100,000-mile powertrain warranty and factory-scheduled free maintenance on new vehicles for three years or 36,000 miles, per Car and Driver. Both the Elantra and the Elantra Hybrid are priced to please.

The Corolla is well-known for its lifespan and value retention, despite the national buying trend toward trucks and SUVs. According to iSeeCars, 8.9% of original Corolla owners have kept their cars for more than 15 years, the highest percentage of any sedan.

The Corolla is a great option for any driver trying to cut costs because of its surprising fuel efficiency and reputation for easy maintenance.

The Legacy has long been a popular choice for individuals looking to save money on a dependable, user-friendly and easy-to-drive vehicle, but 2025 will be the final year for the model, according to Subaru.

Used Legacys tend to hold their value (over 94% of Subaru Legacy vehicles sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today), and the car has been an Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) “Top Safety Pick” for the past 18 years.

With proper maintenance, almost any modern car should make it to 200,000 miles. However, according to Vehicle History, there are owners that have driven their Mazda3s 250,000 to 300,000 miles. Available as a sedan or hatchback, both compacts are among the safest and most affordable cars on the market.

In addition to the impressive 191-horsepower 4-cylinder engine and 6-speed automatic transmission, the four-door sedan comes with a host of standard safety features.

Ending with an EV, the Tesla Model 3 has helped to bring electric sedans to the masses via impressive looks and performance (and frequent price discounts!). Tesla head Elon Musk once tweeted that the Model 3’s battery modules should last between 300,000 and 500,000 miles — though you can expect it to be closer to 200,000 miles, per MotorTrend.
