11 SUVs That Depreciate Fastest Over 5 Years

An unfortunate truth in the auto market is that within seconds of a brand-new vehicle purchase, it begins to lose value. However, some brands and vehicle types depreciate faster than others. Specifically, very few depreciate with more rapidity than SUVs, especially luxury SUVs.

Recently, the used vehicle resource iSeeCars compiled a study, charting those vehicles which depreciate the most (and least) over the span of five years. What they found might surprise you.

Further, from that list, GOBankingRates culled the 11 SUVs that depreciate the fastest over the course of five years. Curious if your dream SUV is on the list? Read on.

• Average 5-year depreciation: 65%
• Loss of value vs. MSRP: $53,165

The Infiniti QX80, while packed with a roomy cargo area, decent reliability and fairly advanced tech, also comes with a very high MSRP. That means its value has nowhere to go but steeply downward as soon as it’s purchased and driven off the lot, per Top Speed.

• Average 5-year depreciation: 63.7%
• Loss of value vs. MSRP: $64,991

As Motor1.com reported, Maserati’s in general depreciate rapidly due to dizzyingly high maintenance costs, shaky reliability and a rather steep MSRP, all of which are issues with Maseratis in general — and the Levante specifically.

• Average 5-year depreciation: 62.9%
• Loss of value vs. MSRP: $56,996

CarBuzz noted that while the Escalade ESV can go the long haul on the road, it falters in the aftermarket. As a result, consumers have simply skipped over the massive SUV, effectively slicing its value in half.

• Average 5-year depreciation: 62.9%

Thanks to the Range Rover’s rather high price and expensive maintenance costs, its resale value takes a beating on the aftermarket, cratering its value quickly over five years, per Top Speed.

• Average 5-year depreciation: 61.6%

As noted by Kelley Blue Book, luxury SUVs in general depreciate far more quickly than other types of vehicles. The Audi Q7 is no different. Further, the Q7’s high MSRP all but guarantees a crashing depreciation.

Much like its cousin, the QX80, the Infiniti QX60 has a very stiff MSRP. That, along with the constant updating of technology in the luxury SUV world, keeps the QX60’s depreciation as daunting as its original asking price

• Average 5-year depreciation: 61%
• Loss of value vs. MSRP: $53,458

While the Escalade is an iconic vehicle, with a relatively low need for maintenance and repairs, it’s also a very pricey vehicle. Not only is the Escalade’s price tag high, but so are the vehicle’s maintenance costs.

While it may not need repairs often, when it does, it’s typically very costly. All these factors conspire to decrease the SUV’s value on the aftermarket after a few years.

• Loss of value vs. MSRP: $36,365

CarEdge reported the Land Rover Discovery comes at both a high MSRP and rather severe maintenance and repair costs. This cuts deeply into the Discovery’s value on the resale market.

• Average 5-year depreciation: 60.3%
• Loss of value vs. MSRP: $62,069

Top Speed made it clear why the Lincoln Navigator flounders value-wise in the auto aftermarket — it’s expensive with unimpressive fuel economy and weak brand reliability.

• Loss of value vs. MSRP: $33,914

Top Speed reported that despite being loaded with quality tech and a roomy interior, the Nissan Armada also comes with a value-killing low fuel economy and rather high MSRP.

• Average 5-year depreciation: 60%

The Expedition is Ford’s largest SUV, and it comes with a rather large depreciation curve as well, per Top Speed. Its reliability is low, its fuel economy is lower and, overall, the SUV handles somewhat poorly. All of that severely cuts into the Expedition’s value over the course of five years.
