As Republicans and Democrats strategize ways to address the debt ceiling conundrum, some are concerned that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program could become a casualty of any solution.

Republicans favor cutting back on spending, and some are targeting programs such as Social Security, Medicare and SNAP.

Emergency SNAP benefits created during the pandemic are ending this month, and work requirements are returning as well, which is expected to bring added challenges to vulnerable SNAP recipients.

Regarding SNAP cuts in the debt ceiling discussions, House Appropriations Chair Kay Granger (R-Texas) told Politico, “We’re still looking at it. Haven’t made a decision yet.”

Other Republicans hinted that SNAP and other aid programs could be targeted for savings.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) told Politico, “We want to save taxpayers money and get spending under control in Washington.”
