With the warm weather and longer days, summer is the perfect time to enjoy meals out with friends and family. But with rising prices, dining out can quickly become an expensive activity.

The cost of dining out has skyrocketed in recent years and inflation hasn’t helped, resulting in a 22% increase since 2019, according to Stacker. FinanceBuzz reported that popular chains like McDonald’s, Popeyes, Taco Bell, Chipotle, and Jimmy John’s have raised their prices by an average of 60% between 2014 and 2024.

Here are four tips to help you save money when you eat out this summer season and beyond.

1. Split Meals

One of the simplest ways to save money at restaurants is by splitting meals. Many restaurants, especially those known for their generous portions, serve dishes large enough to share. Before heading to a restaurant, check online reviews or menus to get an idea of portion sizes. Some restaurants even have shareable meal deals that you can take advantage of — if you’re dining with a friend or your partner.

2. Join a Restaurant Loyalty Program

Many eateries offer apps and membership programs that provide discounts, freebies, and exclusive deals to regular customers. Most loyalty programs allow you to earn points with each purchase. These points can be redeemed for free meals, sides, or drinks.

For example, the McDonald’s app offers rewards points that can be exchanged for menu items and the restaurant also has app offers such as “Free Fry Friday” that you can redeem.

3. Take Advantage of Lunch Specials

Lunch specials are another excellent way to dine out on a budget. Many restaurants offer discounted lunch menus with smaller portions or combo deals. Lunch specials are typically available during specific hours — usually from late morning to early afternoon — so be sure to visit during these times to take advantage of lower prices. But you can typically get combo deals that include an entree, side, and drink at a reduced price.

4. Use Coupons For Fast Food Chains

Many fast food chains offer digital coupons on their websites or through their apps, and you can also still use the paper coupons you receive in the mail. Just cut them out and place them in your car in a Ziploc bag. That way when you’re out, you already have the coupons handy. Check the expiration dates weekly and change out your stash as needed.

If you sign up for emails or have the restaurant’s apps, you will also be notified of timely coupon offers so you can save on your next meal.
