Many people have been looking forward to fall for the cooler weather, crunchy leaves and, of course, all the fall activities. Depending on where someone lives, fall can be an exciting time full of pumpkin spice lattes and changing leaves. However, it can also be an expensive time of year.

Data from the National Retail Federation shows that spending on just Halloween in 2025 will reach over $13 billion. However, there are many ways people can enjoy the fall season with their families without spending a fortune.

Here are some examples of fall activities people can do for around $50.

Apple Picking

For those who live in an area of the country with apple picking, that is a must-do, memorable fall activity. Depending on what someone purchases during their outing, it can cost anywhere from $35 to $60.

Many places sell a bag that people can buy and fill with as many apples as they can. Some apple orchards or apple cider mills also sell hot cider and donuts and offer petting zoos or face painting for children.

So, this outing can be a frugal day out with the family, or it can get costly, depending on how many activities people choose to do.

Bake a Pie

After going apple picking, the next logical fall activity is to put the apples to good use and make a pie. Bakers can purchase all the supplies necessary for less than $15. At that price, people can even make two. To create more memories, consider using a vintage, fall-themed pie pan.

Walk Through a Haunted House

There are many different levels of visiting a haunted house. There are Halloween parties where neighbors set up a haunted house for the kids. There are also high-end haunted houses set up at theme parks or other destinations. Finding one that a town or a nearby community sponsored is likely a good middle ground. House tickets can cost anywhere from $25 to $45 per person, depending on location.

Visit a Pumpkin Patch

Visiting a pumpkin patch is a really nice fall activity. Most pumpkin patches charge by the size or weight of the pumpkin. People should discuss a budget ahead of time with their families, such as allowing each child to pick out one favorite pumpkin that they can carry. Then, have a lovely afternoon with family, carving pumpkins, and decorating the front porch.

Go for a Hay Ride

Many schools, communities and churches put on a fall festival where kids can participate in full crafts and take a hayride. This is a great opportunity to take photos with family and friends, as well.

Host a Scary Movie Marathon

If people use movies already included with their streaming service, hosting a scary movie marathon is an affordable fall activity. Make it memorable by spending extra on pizza and each family member’s favorite candy.

Build a Bonfire

If the weather gets cold enough, build a bonfire outside and have a s’mores night. Ask kids to hunt for the best sticks to use for marshmallows and purchase a few extra types of chocolate to experiment with. Have the family vote on which s’mores ingredients are their favorite.
