Marshalls is the go-to store for discounted and budget-friendly holiday gifts and decor. But what are the best holiday items to splurge on, settle for and skip at Marshalls?
Here are six holiday items to consider — or avoid — purchasing at Marshalls and why they are or aren’t worth it.
Splurge: High-End Holiday Decor
For those who want to decorate their home with high-end holiday decor, Marshalls has plenty of budget-friendly decorations. The retailer buys excess inventory and closeouts from other retailers and manufacturers at discounted prices, which allows it to sell brand-name items at a much lower price.
For example, this Old St. Nick beekeeper oval platter from Vietri is $39.99 at Marshalls, but on the brand’s website, the same platter sells for $96 on sale.
Splurge: Packaged Snacks and Drinks
Marshalls sells a variety of gourmet packaged snacks, spices, chocolate, drinks and other shelf-stable foods. Ali Domrongchai, a writer for The Kitchn, wrote in an article that some of the best inexpensive treats for the holidays are the Marini Savoiardi ladyfingers, the Alaska Smokehouse lobster spread and the Sanders dark chocolate sea salt caramels.
Settle: Holiday Throw Blankets and Pillows
The holiday throw blankets and pillows from Marshalls are fun and festive at an affordable price. While they may not offer ultra-premium quality, there are plenty of different types of materials, colors and styles to choose from.
The downside is that they aren’t something you would typically have out all year. Plus, the quality can be hit or miss.
Settle: Gift Wrap
Marshalls carries wrapping paper, gift boxes and ribbon in various sizes, designs and colors. They aren’t always the cheapest option, and there aren’t typically as many options as what you’d find in other stores. But the paper is still durable and is worth settling for if you’re already making a trip to Marshalls.
Skip: Holiday Kitchenware
It may be tempting to purchase holiday kitchenware, but it’s a big investment for something you’ll be using for only a few weeks out of the year. Your everyday kitchen items will work just as well, and the Christmas-themed plates and glassware from Marshalls may not make it through the next holiday season.
Skip: Toys
The cost of toys adds up. While they may be a bargain at Marshalls, they may not last as long. According to FinanceBuzz, the toys at Marshalls may not have the same standards as those at other retailers and could have pieces that break off easily due to lower quality.
Editor’s note: Pricing and availability may vary depending on location.
