Most retailers have crazy offers during the holidays, and Home Depot is no exception. While big markdowns on items may sound like “great deals,” it’s a wise financial move to wait until January for even bigger savings.
Before you rush to the store to grab items you’ve been wanting to own before the year ends, here are some things you shouldn’t purchase from Home Depot until after the holidays.
1. Gifts
If you’re considering buying gifts from Home Depot for family and friends, you may want to wait. While the store has various giftable items — from power tools to appliances and kids’ stuff — the prices during the holidays aren’t always the best. Retailers know many people are in “gift-buying mode,” so most discounts aren’t as much as they may seem.
Once Christmas is over, Home Depot slashes the prices of gift sets, and you can get a 50% to 70% markdown on some items. Patience could save you money on whatever gift you’re eyeing right now, especially if you have the liberty to wait.
2. Large Appliances
Purchasing large appliances like washers, dryers and refrigerators during the holidays may seem like a smart move, especially with sales everywhere. However, heavy discounts on large appliances at Home Depot don’t happen over the holidays, but after. After Black Friday and Christmas holidays, retailers want to clear overstocked inventory, and appliance deals are often better during this time period.
Another thing to consider is the influx of open-box or returned items after Christmas. This means Home Depot may offer open-box appliances at a steep discount. If you don’t mind buying returned items, this is the perfect opportunity to save big.

For many people, the holidays are for home makeovers, but it may not be a good time to buy furniture and home decor. Whether you’re shopping for a cozy couch or dining set, or want to update your living room, stores like Home Depot know shoppers are decorating their homes for the holidays. Like electronics, new furniture designs arrive on showroom floors in February. This means retailers tend to offer massive discounts in January as they clear inventory to make room for new styles. Don’t let the holiday shopping frenzy tempt you.

Electronics like TVs, thermostats and security cameras typically see their most significant price drops during Black Friday, Cyber Monday and all through the festive season — but don’t let the big markdowns tempt you.
You’ll likely see more significant savings after Jan. 1, as clearance sales kick in. Besides, the U.S. Consumer Electronics Show happens in January, where the latest tech models are rolled out. This means you’ll find great deals on the previous year’s models.
5. Power Tools and Equipment
Home Depot offers a wide selection of home improvement tools geared toward DIY. Whether you like hands-on work or to gift your loved one a toolset, waiting until the holidays are over is better.
Additionally, Home Depot offers some of the best deals for tools during Father’s Day and Labor Day. So, unless you’re purchasing a gift for someone who needs it urgently, waiting until January or later can save you money on tools and equipment you’ve been eyeing.
