Usually, you aren’t commended for cutting corners in life. But when it comes to saving money on your monthly expenses, it’s welcomed. While the price of cell service might be expensive, you shouldn’t have to break the bank to use your cellphone.
Here are four ways that you can dramatically reduce your phone bill.
1. Cut Your Landline
Anything a landline phone can do, a mobile phone can do, if not better. In 2017, it was reported that 77 percent of Americans owned smartphones, nearly 32 points higher than the percentage of people who owned landlines. Although a landline phone might seem necessary to have in your home, it doesn’t have to be. If your cellphone provider and/or place of employment has reliable and secure phone service, then consider parting ways with your landline. By doing so, you could potentially save yourself an extra $15-$30 per month.
2. Change Phone Providers
You might feel hesitant to leave your cellphone provider, but don’t be afraid to explore other options. According to a survey from Consumer Reports, 50 percent of people surveyed said they saved money by switching to another cellphone provider. In many cases, those who switched saved at least $20 per month.
3. Re-Examine Your Cellphone Contract
When it comes to signing up for a cellphone, it’s easy to get stuck unknowingly paying for perks and services you don’t need. In this case, revisit your cellphone contract. If you are paying for services you don’t need or that are no longer affordable, try switching to a carrier that allows more payment flexibility or that doesn’t have contracts at all. Some brands, such as Boost Mobile, have plans starting as low as $35 per month.
4. Be Mindful of Your Data Usage
Data is easily one of the biggest factors that decides your cellphone bill because it’s what allows your phone to connect to the internet wherever you want. Things like streaming music, checking email and using social media all require data. In order to limit your data usage, connect your phone to available WiFi whenever possible or change your data plan.
Try researching carriers who provide unlimited data or offer a family plan. Boost Mobile and Sprint are two providers that offer unlimited data for $100 a month under a family plan.
