When traveling, it can be tempting to shop in your hotel. Many offer necessities and conveniences either in a gift shop or right in your room. But they also come with a hefty price tag.

Here are five items you should avoid purchasing at your hotel to save money (and free up your budget for other, more fun things).

Bottled Water

This one seems obvious, but you’d be surprised by how many people buy a bottle of water when they’re in the room or at the hotel. While some places offer complimentary bottles, be sure to check before you open one. You might find the same thing for less money at the convenience store nearby.

The Minibar

Raiding the minibar can be tempting, especially if you’re on a business trip and your company is paying for it. Or is it? First, you’ll want to check to ensure that those items are included in your per diem or travel allowance. And if you’re traveling for personal reasons, Expedia points out that many hotels have moved from potato chips and candy bars to fancy candies and draft cocktails.

As you might imagine, these can be quite pricey. You’re better off finding a nearby liquor store and mixing those drinks yourself.

Room Service

In addition to bottled water, Business Insider lists hotel food as another item you may want to avoid. On-premises restaurants often inflate their prices and you can likely find the same fare at an establishment off property. And, as you’re likely aware, ordering room service can be even more expensive, so that’s something else to avoid during your trip if you want to save money.

Gift Shop

If you’re looking for a souvenir or a gift for someone during your trip, you may want to avoid the hotel shop. At hotels offering gift shops, the prices can be more than double what you’d pay at a store within walking distance.

Valet Parking

The convenience of valet parking is tempting, but it’s also quite expensive. It might be worth your time to check out self-parking options and other options near your hotel. You might also want to consider if public transportation is a viable alternative.
