Money in your family’s budget might be tight this year. After all, prices on many items are high, and certain sacrifices have to be made to make ends meet. Even so, that doesn’t mean you have to give up a fun family vacation this summer. There are plenty of destinations available for you and your loved ones to go to while not overspending in the process.
Here are some affordable travel destinations perfect for your family this summer.
Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach, Florida
The hot spots in Florida are Miami, Orlando and the Keys, but in 2025, the destination to check out in the Sunshine State might be Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach.
According to Sean Doherty, the tourism director at Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach VCB, the Charlotte Harbor Gulf Island Coast is a collection of 10 charming coastal communities and four barrier islands clustered around the state’s second-largest harbor.
“As Florida’s premier eco-tourism destination, the area is known for its unspoiled beauty and is an outdoor enthusiast’s haven,” Doherty said. He called this slice of Florida both idyllic and relaxing while also being perfectly reasonable when it comes to the prices of lodging, food and entertainment.
San Diego
Another beach destination that stands out for being affordable for families is San Diego. While the city itself is average in size, the county of San Diego offers so much to do — and not all of it comes with a hefty price tag.
“I always recommend San Diego as a great place for families to vacation,” said Steve Schwab, CEO of Casago. “There is so much to do there — visit the San Diego Zoo, go to the beach, check out their fantastic theater scene, go to a pro sports game, etc. And, the area isn’t quite as crazy and packed as nearby LA.”
Schwab highlighted that families should look into staying in nearby areas like Oceanside or Carlsbad, which may have more inexpensive lodging options.
Des Moines, Iowa
Some may not consider Des Moines because it isn’t located on the coast or because it may not have the reputation of other cities. However, do not rule out Des Moines as a prime destination for your family to spend some time this year.
According to Greg Edwards, president and CEO of Catch Des Moines, this Midwestern city is the perfect summer vacation that combines family fun, cultural experiences and outdoor adventure — all without breaking the bank.
“Des Moines is the Midwest’s hidden gem for families who want a memorable trip on a budget. The city offers big city attractions and amenities without the cost,” Edwards explained, calling the city the “Midwest destination when it comes to fun and affordability.”
There are plenty of activities for families to enjoy in the city too. “Whether you’re watching zebras at the zoo, biking along the scenic trails or enjoying a picnic with the sculpture, Des Moines is the surprisingly cool and fun summer destination,” Edwards said.
