Budget-conscious travelers can realize their passport dreams this year. Some of the most exciting places to visit this year are surprisingly budget-friendly. Expedia’s Air Travel Hacks report highlighted trending international destinations where travelers can get the most bang for their buck.
From sun-soaked beaches to historic cities filled with charm, there are three affordable and trending international travel destinations in 2025.
Goa, India
Travelers craving a tropical escape without maxing out their credit cards should check out Goa, India.
Nestled on India’s west coast, Goa is a laid-back paradise offering golden beaches, a vibrant local history and buzzworthy nightlife at wallet-friendly prices.
Many of Goa’s best experiences are free. Spend the days soaking up the sun at Palolem Beach, known for its calm waters, or head to Arambol Beach, whose bohemian vibe boasts live music and sunset drum circles. Street markets are packed with affordable souvenirs, and local cafes serve up mouthwatering curries at reasonable prices.
On average, round-trip flights from the U.S. to Goa range from $755 to $1,400 depending on the departure city, booking time and season, according to Expedia, and accommodations range from luxury hotels at $218 per night to mid-priced hotels around $90 per night.
Travelers looking to stretch their budget even further can skip the taxis. Buses and rickshaws are cheap, and renting a scooter is an easy and convenient way to explore.
Bucharest, Romania
With its old-world charm and modern energy, Bucharest, Romania is an underrated European gem.
Travelers can stroll through history while visiting the city’s most famous cultural landmarks, such as Old Town, the Romanian Athenaeum and the open-air Village Museum. In addition, travelers who want the feeling of luxury without having to pay luxury prices should check out Therme Bucharest, one of Europe’s largest thermal spa complexes. Visitors can purchase a day-pass for $22.
“It includes thermal pools, saunas and relaxation areas, making it a luxurious but affordable experience,” said travel blogger Hristina Nabosnyi.
From Bucharest, travelers can drive along the scenic Transfagarasan Highway, stroll through the festive Craiova’s Christmas Market for winter wonderland delights or prowl around the Bran Castle, a legendary fortress linked to the Dracula myth.
Nabosnyi said flights from the U.S. average between $500 and $800, depending on the season. However, local accommodations in Bucharest are generally affordable.
“Affordable hotels in Bucharest start at around €30-€70 ($33-$77) per night, with boutique stays and Airbnbs available for even less,” Nabosnyi said. “On average, a decent hotel with breakfast in the city center would cost €50 ($55) per night.”
Perugia, Italy
Perugia is the perfect alternative for wallet-savvy travelers who love Italy but want to avoid the tourist crowds and higher prices found in Rome and Florence.
“A meal at a local restaurant typically costs between $20 and $40 per person, which makes it a rather affordable travel destination compared to other, more popular Italian cities,” said Mercedes Zach, a travel expert at ASAP Tickets, part of Trevolution Group.
Located in the Umbria region, the hilltop city charms visitors with its medieval streets, panoramic views and relaxed vibe.
“There are free activities to engage in while in Perugia, such as taking walking tours around the historic town center, visiting local markets or attending cultural events that are open to the general public and can enrich the whole travel experience without breaking the bank,” Zach said.
Flights from New York to Perugia can start at about $280 if travelers book one to two months in advance.
“Keep in mind that the peak summer period will always be more expensive compared to other times of the year,” Zach said. “Also, direct flights to Perugia are rather limited, so be prepared for layovers in major hubs like Rome, Florence or Milan.”
Budget-savvy travelers can also take a train or bus to Perugia, with the standard fare ranging from $16 to $37, depending on the type and ticket class. Staying in Perugia is affordable, with B&Bs going for around $100 per night.
“Mid-range hotels can range from $80 to $150 per night,” Zach said. “They offer a good balance between comfort and affordability. To ensure availability and more favorable rates, be sure to book your accommodations in advance, as well.”
