About to book a last-minute spring break(ish) trip? If money matters more than the destination, it’s worth knowing where you can get the most affordable accommodations. Often, last-minute hotel bookings are extra expensive because hotels capitalize on the consumer’s urgency.

And it can go the other way, too. Sometimes a hotel booking made the day before or even the day of can be surprisingly affordable — much less than what you anticipated. This usually relates to a hotel being underbooked and somewhat desperate to fill up rooms.

New research by Vio found the 10 cheapest U.S. cities for booking a hotel room at the last minute. Then, to get perspective of how dramatic (or so-so) these savings are, GOBankingRates found the average hotel price for a planned three-night stay, using BudgetYourTrip. Here are the places where you may be able to score hotel deals.

Reno, Nevada
