Iconic destinations are starting to price out the very travelers who made them famous. From rising hotel rates to tourism taxes, popular vacation spots like Hawaii are becoming less affordable each year.

GOBankingRates scouted out Hawaii and fourother vacation hotspots to visit soon — before they become too expensive.

Hawaii

Hawaii remains one of the most iconic dream destinations in the world — but rising costs may soon make it harder for many travelers to afford. Post-COVID-19 pandemic demand, increased tourism taxes and efforts to curb overtourism have led to noticeably higher hotel rates, airfare and rental car prices across the islands.

Still, its volcanoes, beaches, surfing, hiking and the rich Indigenous Hawaiian culture make it an attractive destination. If you want to visit, you’ll find the best times to be late April to early June or September to mid-December.

  • Budgeting tips: Fly midweek, consider staying on less-touristed islands like the Big Island or Kauai and book accommodations well in advance.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona has grown increasingly popular in recent years, drawing travelers with its historic city charm, vibrant culture and beaches.

“Because of the tourism demand and the removal of short-term Airbnbs, the price for accommodations is going through the roof,” said budget travel blogger Andrew Cachia of Get Lost on a Budget.

For off-peak prices combined with a likelihood of good weather, March or October are good times to visti Barcelona.

  • Budgeting tip: “If a country is going to change its currency, most commonly when European countries start using Euro, prices skyrocket,” Cachia said. “The cheapest countries in Europe are those with their own currency — I recommend taking advantage of this fact ASAP.”

Venice, Italy

Venice has always drawn travelers with its romantic canals, historic architecture and dreamlike charm. However, as crowds return in record numbers, the city has introduced new fees and restrictions that are making it more expensive — and more urgent to visit now.

“They’ve recently announced the reintroduction of a ‘daytripper’ tourist fee to manage overtourism,” said  Jordan Dean, co-founder of Jordan and Emily Travel. “On around 54 days this year, visitors need to pay €5-€10, and if you’re found without a ticket, you can be fined up to €300!”

Consider visiting Venice during the “shoulder seasons” — spring and fall — for fewer crowds and lower prices.

Tulum, Mexico

Tulum has evolved from a quiet beach town into a hotspot for wellness retreats and upscale escapes, driving up the price of most travel services.

“On top of that, the demand for real estate and long-term accommodations has surged, contributing to even higher costs,” said Mercedes Zach, travel expert at ASAP Tickets.

To find the best prices in Tulum, visit between May and June or September and November.

  • Budgeting tips: Look for accommodations and restaurants away from the beach, including the pueblo, where prices are lower.

Park City, Utah

Park City has long been a favorite for skiers and Sundance Film Festival attendees. However, the town is rapidly becoming a year-round luxury destination. Increased visibility on social media and popularity of cold-weather vacations have driven up demand and prices, especially during peak ski season.

“We are seeing more people than ever traveling for skiing and other winter trips,” said Steve Schwab, CEO of Casago, a vacation rentals and property management company. “So, it can be best price-wise to visit Park City during the summer, late spring and early fall, when it isn’t the optimal skiing season.”

  • Budgeting tips: Look for package deals, and consider vacation rentals over resorts.
