According to the Monthly Vacationer Blog, 2024 is set to be a record-breaking year for the number of retirees traveling. This means that many retirees will likely seek international travel destinations as they embark on new adventures.
The off-season of fall and winter can be an ideal time to visit most European countries as the weather is still tolerable, and you can usually avoid overcrowding from tourism. Best of all, you can save money since the high season prices have dropped.
These are the three most affordable off-season vacation spots in Europe for retirees on a fixed income.
Albania
“Also known as Europe’s hidden gem, Albania allures with its untouched natural beauty, stunning mountain scenery, spectacular ancient castles and picturesque beaches that can easily compete with the Mediterranean minus the tourist crowds and high costs,” said Maya Kapoor-Miller, travel manager at Dreamport. You can find private villas for as low as $54 per night if you’re a retiree looking for a budget trip.
Here are some of the destinations worth visiting in Albania, according to Kapoor-Miller:
- The capital city, Tirana, stands out with its colorful Soviet-era architecture and historical monuments.
- Spille Beach, about 46 miles from the capital, is known for being a must-visit holiday destination even during the off-season. The local cuisine, which includes lamb and seafood, is a delicious mix of Balkan, Turkish and Mediterranean influences.
The Albanian weather is still moderately warm during the fall months, making it comfortable for outdoor activities and sightseeing.
Kapoor-Miller added, “Moreover, Albania is one of those few destinations that offers a cost-effective lifestyle without compromising quality. Prices are notably lower than in many European countries, so retirees can stretch their pensions further while benefiting from affordable living expenses.”
Montenegro
“It’s a beautiful Balkan country with rugged mountains, villages and towns of the Renaissance era, as well as a breathtaking coastline of the Adriatic Sea,” said Kapoor-Miller. Montenegro is quieter than European coastal destinations such as Greece or Croatia. It’s very reasonably priced compared to the rest of Europe for retirees on a fixed income.
Some of the best locations for seniors include:
- Budva Riviera
- The coastal city of Ulcinj
- The island of Sveti Stefan
- The beach town, Herceg Novi
- The historical capital city of Podgorica
Montenegro offers a lower cost of living, making it an attractive vacation spot for retirees on a fixed income. Kapoor-Miller pointed out that everything from dining out to entertainment is more affordable without compromising on quality.
Bulgaria
“A relatively lesser-known yet equally great vacation destination for retirees is Bulgaria — a country with amazing nature, rich culture and miles of fascinating Black Sea coastline,” noted Kapoor-Miller.
A few locations worth checking out in Bulgaria are:
- Silistar Beach for a fully relaxed atmosphere that can also be enjoyed during the off-season
- Bolata, a small cove beach that is protected from the wind, is ideal for a lazy day outdoors
Bulgaria offers tourists plenty of natural and historic sights and is also known as one of the most affordable destinations in Europe. Kapoor-Miller noted that seniors are often surprised by how inexpensive everything is compared to other European hot spots, from accommodation to food, transportation and entertainment.
There are also plenty of free-entry activities and tours specifically designed for seniors looking to explore this beautiful country at a more relaxed pace while meeting other travelers in the same age group.
