Have you ever dreamed about taking a trip that you can tell people about for years to come? The kind of experience that stays with you well after you arrive back home?
After years of sticking to budget travel to save money, 2026 might be the year to make that happen. It could be soaking in Iceland’s photo-worthy hot springs or carving through the fresh powder at one of Colorado’s ski resorts.
Some destinations are just worth the extra money. These bucket list destinations are designed to help you recharge and remember how travel can help you create a lifetime of memories.
Keep reading as we explore destinations that should be on your travel wish list in 2026 if you’re ready to splurge on something memorable.
Iceland
Iceland has become a popular travel destination in recent years. With many nonstop flights from across the United States, it’s easier than ever to get there. Activities like chasing the northern lights, relaxing in the Blue Lagoon and exploring hard to reach glaciers are experiences you’ll never forget.
The biggest obstacle for many people heading to Iceland is the cost. Iceland can be an expensive country to visit, but it’s well worth the cost if you’re prepared.
“As 2026 approaches, climate-driven change is making some of these landscapes less stable,” said Ann Peters, expeditions manager at Katla UNESCO Global Geopark. “Why? Glaciers retreat, ice caves collapse, shorelines erode. Going now means seeing these places while they still exist in many of their dramatic forms. It’s truly a moment in time.”
Multi-Country South American Adventure
If you have some extra time, consider tackling multiple bucket list destinations in one trip. Due to the travel distances, many people planning a South American adventure, choose to include stops in Brazil, Argentina and Chile. You can cruise through the Amazon rainforest or indulge in Rio de Janeiro before heading to sip Malbec in Buenos Aires and then explore the Patagonia region of Chile.
If this kind of travel feels overwhelming, you might consider splurging on a private guided tour across each country.
“For those with a little more time to roam, a 14- to 21-day trip across South America that includes a combo like Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and Patagonia or the Atacama Desert definitely qualifies as ‘splurge-worthy.’ It offers a little bit of everything: culture, great food and some of the most fascinating landscapes in the world,” said Sheree Holt, chief roaming strategist at Why Not Roam.
“Yes the multiple flights, private transfers and custom tours across countries are going to cost a bit more, but it’s a fantastic way to mark a milestone, celebrate retirement or finally enjoy the freedom to travel without compromise,” Holt added.
Key West, FL
If you prefer to stay closer to home, there’s no better place to soak up the sun than the Southernmost spot in the United States, Key West. It offers the perfect mix of island vibes, amazing seafood and tropical luxury, all without needing a passport.
While Key West can easily be done on a budget, it’s easy to upgrade your experience to create even more memorable experiences. You can charter a sunset yacht cruise or head out on an all-day fishing excursion.
With hundreds of hotels and Airbnbs to choose from, there is something for all travelers. However, if you want to spoil yourself, one property to consider is the Ocean Edge Resort and Marina. There you can enjoy oceanfront rooms, one of six saltwater pools, plus complimentary kayaks, standup paddle boards and bikes during your stay.
Colorado
Staying in the United States, the final splurge worthy spot for travel in 2026 is Colorado. With some of the best skiing in North America, Colorado is home to dozens of ski resorts that are sure to test your skills.
Resorts like Vail and Aspen bring skiers from all around the world. Although their price tag for staying during peak ski season can be high, the experience is like none other.
However, if you want to be one of the first to experience true Colorado luxury, consider the Kindred Resort in Summit County. Opening this winter, it’s one of the most highly anticipated ski-in/ski-out resorts Colorado has had in a decade. With three restaurants, a private members’ club, riverfront fire pits and a dedicated family après scene, it’s redefining what luxury means for active families in the Rockies.
