As the days get longer and warmer, the world around us begins to come to life. For many people, spring calls for exploration and discovery, but not every destination is as ideal as it seems.
With the warmer weather come crowds and surging prices in certain travel hotspots. For retirees looking to travel on a budget while enjoying the season’s beauty, knowing which destinations to skip this spring can be as important as finding the best places to visit.

1. New York City
Towering skyscrapers, blooming cherry blossoms in parks and the bustling energy around Times Square make New York City an irresistible destination. However, visiting NYC in the spring can be expensive and tiresome for retirees.
Hotels in Manhattan and other prime locations often double in price due to the influx of tourists and locals eager to enjoy the warmer weather and street festivals. Moving around and dining can also be pricey, even for casual meals.
2. Hawaii
Hawaii’s breathtaking beaches and tropical scenery makes it one of the popular travel destinations in the spring, but not for those on a budget. Its paradise appeal comes with a price as more and more people start flocking to the island to enjoy the mild, warm weather.
If you need a serene destination on a budget, Maui may not be your ideal match in spring.
3. Switzerland
The picturesque landscape makes Switzerland tempting to visit. However, if you’re a retiree traveling on a budget this spring, skip this spot.
That’s not to say Switzerland is not a great destination. If you have a mid-range or luxury budget, you’ll have fun.
4. Netherlands
Springtime in the Netherlands has everywhere looking colorful with tulips. But don’t let the beauty of this destination lure you, as it attracts large crowds, resulting in sky-high prices.
Beyond tulips, canal cruises and art galleries experience long queues and increased entry fees, making it difficult to have a blast without breaking the bank.
5. Santorini, Greece
March through May is the perfect time to explore Santorini without summer crowds and winter chills. The sunny and warm weather, without being uncomfortably hot, and the beautiful scenery make the spot a perfect spring escape.
However, visiting this island may not be a good idea for retirees, especially those with a fixed income. Even though flight, accommodation, dining and excursion costs will be lower than in the summer months, they are still on the pricier side.
6. Dubai
Hands down to Dubai’s ultra-modern architecture, shopping malls and desert safari. Dining and activities like dessert safaris, water parks and helicopter tours can be pretty expensive.
The warm but not notoriously scorching temperatures in spring may be calling you, but it’s not an ideal spot for budget-conscious retirees.
7. French Polynesia
French Polynesian islands like Bora Bora are so attractive with their turquoise lagoons and serene atmosphere. However, it’s one of the most expensive travel spots in the world.
Flight and accommodation costs skyrocket, especially in the spring when more people are chasing warmth — not to mention dining and island tours.
If you’re looking for an affordable tropical escape, save this paradise for a time when budget is not a concern.
