If you had an unlimited travel budget, where would you go? According to the latest data from Faye Travel Insurance, the most popular answer to that question is Africa — it’s the top pick for travelers ready to splurge on travel in 2025.
Here’s a closer look at the top five high-cost travel destinations Americans are splurging on this year, plus, how much these trips will cost you.
African Safaris
Popular destinations in Africa include Rwanda, where the average trip cost is $18,417; Botswana, where the average trip cost is $15,619; and Kenya, where the average trip cost is $15,251.
“For those heading to Africa, the cost is driven up by experiences such as luxury safaris and stays in more remote areas, in addition to airfare, visas and personal expenses,” said Lauren Gumport, VP of communications at Faye Travel Insurance. “The cost of group safaris in Kenya, Botswana and Rwanda vary based on factors such as accommodation quality, safari duration, specific activities included, park fees and meals.”
Gumport noted that it’s possible to spend less on these trips if you choose budget options.
“You can select budget, mid-range and luxury safaris, with the cost per person ranging anywhere from $250 to $3,000+ per day,” she said. “For a typical seven-day safari, total costs might range from $1,400 for budget options in Kenya to over $23,000 for luxury experiences in Rwanda, depending on specific inclusions and the level of personalized service you’re looking to receive.”
In Rwanda, gorilla trekking permits alone are a significant expense, costing around $1,500 per person minimum, Gumport noted.
Seychelles
The Seychelles is also a popular choice for wealthy travelers. The average trip cost for this island destination is $15,775.
“Travelers are splurging on luxury resorts, private island retreats, personalized yacht charters, gourmet dining with beachfront settings and high-end wellness experiences at spas like Six Senses Zil Pasyon,” Gumport said.
“Many also indulge in eco-conscious activities such as guided nature walks and conservation programs on islands like Alphonse,” she continued. “Exclusive, tailor-made experiences — ranging from private beach dinners to sailing adventures — are also upping the cost.”
Antarctica
Wealthy travelers looking to go well off the beaten path are heading to Antarctica, where the average trip cost is $14,491.
“Travelers venturing to Antarctica who indulge in luxury experiences opt for exclusive accommodations offering heated sleeping pods and tailored excursions, such as visits to the South Pole,” Gumport said. “High-end expedition cruises provide upscale amenities alongside immersive wildlife encounters and guided landings.
“Additionally, personalized activities like private helicopter tours and submarine explorations allow guests to experience Antarctica’s pristine landscapes and wildlife from unique perspectives.”
