From romantic European getaways to tropical escapes, travel experts reveal the most affordable destinations for couples seeking adventure or relaxation this season.
Bonn, Germany
“My top recommendation for a beautiful Christmas market destination that won’t break the bank is the picturesque city of Bonn,” noted travel blogger Penelope Bielckus of The Flyaway Girl. She said that four-star hotels in the city center cost less than $355 for a three-night stay, with budget options available for under $76 per night. Plus, “you can easily hop on a train and be in Cologne’s city centre in just half an hour.”
Batumi, Georgia
Bielckus revealed an unexpected gem: “If you can’t choose between a ski adventure or heading off on a city getaway, then you need to keep Batumi in the cards.” Five-star hotels cost less than $76 for three nights, and nearby Goderdzi offers ski passes for just $11 – a fraction of Western resort prices.
Finnish Lapland
“The northern lights appear about 200 nights per year,” said Mercedes Zach of ASAP Tickets. She recommended the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort’s glass igloos for aurora viewing, but said more affordable options start from $55 per night, “from seaside villas to forest cabins with large windows and glass roofs.”
Spain in Winter
“Flight prices drop [to] less than $500 from pretty much every mid-size and major airport in the United States,” explained Kendyl Grender of Kendyl Travels. “Cities like Barcelona and Madrid become a dream,” with half-price hotels and fewer tourists in late January.
Puerto Escondido, Mexico
Zach recommended this bohemian surf town for its “untouched beaches and plenty of things to see and do.” Boutique hotels near Zicatela Beach start at $85 per night, offering amenities like free bikes and garden terraces.
La Paz, Baja Mexico
“The absolute ideal couples’ destination for winter or spring,” said Zach Lazzari of Cross Border Coverage. He highlighted the waterfront restaurants, adventure activities and nightlife along the malecon.
Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico
Lazzari recommended this Baja wine region as “super safe, beautiful and very affordable when compared to most wine regions,” with mild weather throughout winter and spring.
