From vibrant Asian destinations to budget-friendly European getaways, travel experts share their top picks for family-friendly destinations that won’t empty your wallets.
Here’s where to find adventure without overspending.
Vietnam
“Vietnam is a captivating travel destination with breathtaking landscapes, amazing food scene, rich culture and welcoming locals,” said Mercedes Zach, travel agent at ASAP Tickets. She noted that accommodations range from just $35 a night, with meals starting at $1, making it incredibly budget-friendly for families.
The country offers diverse experiences, from the VinWonders theme park to mountain lodges overlooking rice terraces. Zach particularly recommended “renting bicycles and riding around the country’s many rice fields to explore different lanes and paths through the smaller Vietnamese villages.”
Mexico City
Ryan Saylor, director of product marketing at Beyond (a vacation rental platform), recommended Mexico City from March to September. “Short-term rentals average $72 to $90 a night,” he said, making it an affordable option for families wanting to explore one of Latin America’s most vibrant cities.
Lisbon, Portugal
“During the shoulder season from March to May, you can find short-term rentals for between $90 and $130 a night,” Saylor said. This period offers good weather and fewer crowds while allowing families to experience Portugal’s rich culture and cuisine affordably.
Montenegro
Saylor pointed out that Montenegro offers “a budget-friendly European summer, with short-term rental rates ranging from $64 to $92 during peak summer season,” making it an excellent alternative to more expensive European destinations.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Perfect for spring break, this family-friendly destination offers 60 miles of beaches, affordable accommodations and numerous free or low-cost activities. Many resorts offer special spring packages including waterpark access — rates are available as low as $70 a night.
San Antonio, Texas
With a mix of history, culture and entertainment, San Antonio provides excellent value for families. The River Walk, The Alamo and numerous parks offer free attractions, while affordable accommodations are abundant in spring — with rates starting at $60 a night.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Straddling Tennessee and North Carolina, this national park offers free admission and countless outdoor activities. Spring brings wildflowers and moderate temperatures perfect for hiking. Nearby Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge provide affordable accommodation options — with rates starting at $60 a night.
Puerto Rico
No passport required for fellow U.S. citizens, Puerto Rico offers Caribbean beaches, rainforests and cultural experiences at lower prices than many tropical destinations. Spring visits avoid both hurricane season and peak winter prices. Visitors can find downright luxurious accommodations for as little as $100 a night.
