Social Security recipients finally learned how much the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will be in 2024, thanks to the Social Security Administration’s much-anticipated announcement earlier this month. As expected, the COLA will be 3.2% next year — well down from the 2023 COLA of 8.7% but still the third-highest over the past dozen years.

More than 66 million Social Security beneficiaries will see the 3.2% COLA beginning in January 2024, the SSA said in a press release. About 7.5 million people who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits will see higher payments beginning on Dec. 29.

A COLA of 3.2% would add an extra $57.39 a month to the average Social Security retirement benefit, which was $1,793.51 a month as of September 2023. That’s a significant drop from the average monthly increase of about $146 based on the 2023 COLA.

Before the new COLA kicks in, however, Social Security beneficiaries still have two more months of payments under the 2023 adjustment. The payment schedule returned to normal in November after Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients received no payments in October.

Because of a quirk in the payment schedule, SSI beneficiaries get two payments in March, June, September and December, while no payments are deposited in January, April, July and October. One check is issued the remaining four months: February, May, August and November.

As for retirement benefits: The schedule in November 2023 follows the same pattern as every other month. Retirement benefits are paid on the second, third and fourth Wednesdays of every month as determined by your date of birth. Here’s a look at the November payment schedule:

  • If your birthday falls on the 1st through the 10th, you’ll receive your payment on the second Wednesday of the month, which is Nov. 8.
  • If your birthday falls on the 11th through the 20th, you’ll be paid on the third Wednesday (Nov. 15).
  • Those with birthdays on the 21st through the 31st will be paid on the fourth Wednesday (Nov. 22).
  • If you received Social Security before May 1997 or receive both Social Security and SSI benefits, then Social Security is paid on Nov. 3 You can see the full 2023 payment schedule here.

If you don’t receive your payment on your scheduled date, the SSA advises waiting three additional mailing days before contacting the agency.

After that, you can call the agency at 800-772-1213, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Those who are deaf or hard of hearing can reach the SSA’s TTY line at 800-325-0778.
