Aldi has a decent selection of groceries and everyday household items, but the store is somewhat limited when it comes to specialty items or national brands. This isn’t a big deal when your goal is to save money, an area in which Aldi excels. But if you want some variety — and are still interested in scoring some decent deals — Wegmans is worth a look.
At Wegmans, you can find a large selection of groceries, including organic options and those from smaller brands. While the per-unit price tends to be a little higher than what you’d get at Aldi, there are still some affordable items on those shelves.
GOBankingRates compared both grocery stores to find the top items that are actually cheaper at Wegmans. Here are the results.
Egg Sandwich
Price: $2.99
It’s hard to go wrong with a simple breakfast sandwich in the morning, especially if you’re in a hurry to get out the door. At Wegmans, you can get a Red’s Egg’Wich, which uses two egg patties instead of biscuits and has turkey sausage and cheese, for under $3.
In comparison, the cheapest similar option at Aldi is its Breakfast Best Sausage, Egg and Cheese Biscuit Sandwiches for $5.19. This option does include four small sandwiches, making it cheaper per unit price. But if you’re looking for a single meal that’s keto-friendly and gluten-free, Wegmans wins out.
Italian Dressing
Price: $1.99
Some things are cheaper at Wegmans, even down to the ounce. Take this Italian dressing, for example. It costs $0.10 less than a similar option at Aldi. This is despite both of them coming in a 16-ounce bottle. While the savings might not be a ton, they can add up over time.
Plus, Wegmans tends to have a much fresher selection of produce than Aldi. This includes greens and other veggies to spruce up your salad with.
Frozen Vegetables
Price: $0.99
Both grocery stores have a decent selection of frozen vegetables, though Wegmans generally has more options. In both cases, you can find great deals on items in the freezer section.
But at Wegmans, a 12-ounce bag of frozen cut green beans costs under $1. That’s $0.10 less than a similar item at Aldi. This makes Wegmans the more cost-effective option.
The green beans from Wegmans are heart-healthy and contain no artificial flavors or preservatives. They also make for a great snack or side dish to go with your main course. Simply pop them into the microwave, season as desired, and serve.
Shredded Taco Cheese
Price: $2.29
Are you a fan of Taco Tuesday — or taco nights in general? If so, don’t forget to pick up some shredded cheese the next time you’re at the grocery store.
Wegmans sells packages of shredded taco cheese for $2.29. Aldi’s costs $3.09 — $0.80 more. You will get more cheese at Aldi, so keep that in mind when planning your shopping trip.
Pasta
Price: $0.99
If you’re meal planning on a budget, pasta is practically a pantry staple. At Wegmans, you can find gluten-free and other specialty pastas at reasonable prices.
Take the 16-ounce box of rotini pasta, for example. It’s less than a $1, making it $0.10 cheaper than Aldi’s pasta.
Hot Sauce
Price: $1.99
Whether you’re making tacos or want to spice up another main dish, you can find fair prices on hot sauce at both Wegmans and Aldi. But again, you might save a bit of money by shopping at Wegmans — at least as far as the per-bottle price goes.
Wegmans’ Grace Hot Pepper Sauce, for example, costs $0.10 less than a similar hot sauce at Aldi. It comes in a 6-ounce bottle that fits neatly into any space — even the smallest refrigerator door shelves.
