The days of clipping coupons from your local newspaper have changed. While print coupons still exist, many shoppers find their best deals on the web and can do so with the click of a button.

“Whether it’s snagging an extra 20% off that sweater you’ve been stalking or slicing shipping costs down to zero, coupons are the unsung heroes of the sales season,” shared Fred Harrington, the CEO of Coupon Mister, an online platform that provides access to thousands of discount codes, coupons and deals.

Harrington and his team have found the most popular brand coupons searched for between September and December of 2024. Are you searching for these, too?

5. Kroger

  • Number of online searches: 73,000

Basic household foods and products are getting more expensive for everyone these days, so it is no surprise that Kroger made it on the list as everyone hunts for the cheapest deals on their groceries.

“Searching for food coupons makes good sense as it’s a necessity, and food prices have been soaring in recent months,” commented Harrington. “It’s interesting that Kroger is the only grocery chain we see on this list, however.”

4. Valvoline

  • Number of online searches: 89,000

Cars are expensive to buy and oftentimes pricey to maintain. Valvoline ranked as the sixth highest search in Coupon Mister’s study, with Jiffy Lube coming in at ninth with 65,000 searches. Needless to say, consumers are looking for ways to save on their car expenses.

“This highlights both the importance of cars to Americans and the expenses associated with [the brands],” Harrington remarked.

3. JCPenney

  • Number of online searches: 106,000

Clothes shopping has always come with the knowledge that you have to spend top dollar on top trends. However, Coupon Mister finds that lots of fashionistas are getting smart about their spending, looking for discounts and offers online like at JCPenney, which came in third place in the data’s rankings.

“Coupons are a great way to boost a brand’s reputation with consumers,” explained Harrington. “For shoppers, they’re a small but powerful win — who doesn’t love the thrill of getting a deal?

“The temptation of saving a little extra can turn a hesitant browser into an enthusiastic buyer. But for brands, coupons are about so much more than discounts. They’re tools for connection.”

2. Michaels

  • Number of online searches: 151,000

No need for a double take: Michaels came in as the retailer with the second-highest number of coupon searches in the Coupon Mister study. Arts supplies are known for being pricey, so it tracks that creators are mastering the art of saving within their craft.

“While deals are great for driving purchases, they also help build loyalty,” Harrington highlighted. “Customers remember the brands that made them feel like they got a steal. A coupon can be a reason for the customer to come back or, even better, to share the brand with friends.”

1. Subway

  • Number of online searches: 220,000

At the end of 2024, no other brand was searched more for than sandwich chain Subway. That’s because consumers do not just like to eat — they like to save money while they do.

“This shows how thoroughly Subway has conquered the fast food market. Notice: We don’t see big names like McDonald’s up there, for instance,” pointed out Harrington while also noting that Papa John’s ranked tenth place with 96,000 searches.

“In a crowded marketplace, coupons are a way for brands to stand out and grab attention when it matters most-like during sale seasons,” Harrington concluded. “When people are actively looking to spend, a well-timed coupon can put a brand front and center. It says the brand is here to make shopping with them easy and rewarding.”
