Dollar Tree is famous for its super-low prices on small items. Most basic items are around $1.25, though some are priced slightly higher. That said, while also known for affordable products, Dollar Tree doesn’t always translate into savings when you compare quantity, quality or brand names.

If you’re shopping for grocery items like cereal, milk, eggs and noodles, you may want to get them at Walmart instead of Dollar Tree. This is because Walmart sells larger sizes and bulk packages, which lowers the price per ounce compared to Dollar Tree.

But if you’re grocery shopping for yourself or are just buying single-serving items, Dollar Tree can still make financial sense.

Dollar Tree’s low flat pricing makes it easy to save on common household items like plastic measuring cups and decorative items. For example, at Dollar Tree, measuring cups, waste baskets and bathmats all cost less than $2 each. At Walmart, you can expect to pay double that price or more.

Note that a cheap item isn’t always a better value. Though a bit more expensive, Walmart’s versions can be more durable or higher quality, meaning they might last longer and ultimately cost you less over time.

Dollar Tree often stocks generic or off-brand items at its low prices. Walmart, with its size and purchasing power, can offer name-brand items and store-brand equivalents at competitive prices. Therefore, if the brand matters to you more, it’s advisable to go with Walmart.

What To Keep in Mind When Comparing the Two

One of the classic traps shoppers fall into is looking at the sticker price instead of the unit cost. Just because something is $1.25, that doesn’t mean it’s cheaper per ounce or per use than a larger item at Walmart. When you’re shopping at these two places, look at the price per ounce, count or sheet to see how much you’re actually paying.

You’ll also want to pay attention to quality and longevity. A cheaper item that runs out faster or doesn’t work as well can actually end up costing you more in the long run.

Which Is Cheaper in 2026?

If you’re buying groceries in bulk or cooking for a big family, you’ll generally be able to save more at Walmart because of its lower unit prices and larger sizes. Their grocery products are also usually of higher quality compared to Dollar Tree’s.

Of course, if you only need small household items, miscellaneous goods or single-use items like party supplies, Dollar Tree may make more financial sense.
