Nearly 3 in 4 families (71%) traveling for the winter holidays took a road trip rather than flying, according to a new report from Extreme Terrain.

But the car you pick can have a significant impact on your road trip experience — and your budget. Keep reading for more insight into choosing the right car, as well as five car brands the middle class could consider for their next trip.

Picking the Right Car for Your Road Trip

“You don’t want to experience mechanical failures while traveling far from home,” said Paul Knoll, senior marketing director at Extreme Terrain. Breakdowns can delay your travel plans and lead to unexpected costs.

If you’re buying a car in 2026 with road trips on your mind, consider a reliable ride that also has features to make your trip safer and more enjoyable. “Factors like supportive seats, good visibility, cruise control systems and quiet interiors definitely make a road-trip vehicle a desirable choice after several days of travel,” Knoll said.

Toyota

It’s not surprising that Toyota was No. 1 on the list of road trip vehicles. The Toyota Camry has been the bestselling sedan in the U.S. for many years, according to data from Kelley Blue Book.

“The Camry and RAV4 remain popular models,” Knoll said. “The buyer understands that they can rely on these models for resale value, reliable engines and a typical interior that can withstand the test of time.”

For families who need more room for kids, pets, luggage or camping gear, the Grand Highlander delivers with a roomy third row and plenty of cargo space.

Honda

Honda comes next on the list, with popular models like the CR-V, Honda Accord and the Odyssey minivan consistently earning high ratings. U.S. News & World Report awarded Honda the 2026 “Best Car Brand” distinction.

“Toyota and Honda are always at the top because these two brands have managed to get that perfect combination of reliability, comfort and ease of ownership,” Knoll said. “Hondas tend to be priced a bit higher upfront, but their high price tag will be balanced by performance and refinement.”

Ford

Kelley Blue Book ranked the Ford F-Series trucks as the bestselling vehicle for 2025. Ford’s car options provide plenty of choices for outdoor adventurers.

“The wide range of SUVs and trucks means that they provide room, power and comfort that feels custom-made for road trips,” Knoll said.

Chevrolet

“Along with their usability for American car owners, Ford and Chevy appeal to something emotional,” Knoll said. For many, piling into a Chevy for a family vacation formed core memories.

The Chevy Silverado ranked as the second bestselling vehicle for 2025 by Kelley Blue Book. The Chevy Equinox and the roomy Traverse also hold their own in competitive categories.

Kia

Knoll said that Kia delivers affordable cars that don’t feel cheap.

“You’re getting modern design, strong warranties and technological features that were only available in higher-end brands before,” Knoll said. “For long drives, this means comfort and security without the hefty price tag.”
