As summertime rolls around, certain industries are ramping up hiring — but some are paying significantly more than others. To find out the industries paying the most for new hires, the ADP Research Institute analyzed U.S. payroll data from over 25 million workers to identify the pay of the approximately 1.2 million new hires in May.
Among young workers (ages 16 to 22), the leisure and hospitality industry is hiring the most, but it’s paying the least — an average of $13.30 per hour for new hires.
Here’s a look at the six industries that are hiring young seasonal workers and paying the highest average salaries to workers in this cohort.
1. Construction
- Median hourly base pay of new hires ages 16-22 (May 2024): $18
- Change from May 2023: 2.9%
- Change from May 2019: 28.6%
2. Manufacturing
- Median hourly base pay of new hires ages 16-22 (May 2024): $17.80
- Change from May 2023: 4.7%
- Change from May 2019: 31.9%
3. Natural Resources/Mining
- Median hourly base pay of new hires ages 16-22 (May 2024): $16.40
- Change from May 2023: 2.7%
- Change from May 2019: 26.4%
4. Education/Health Services
- Median hourly base pay of new hires ages 16-22 (May 2024): $16
- Change from May 2023: 3.9%
- Change from May 2019: 33.3%
5. Financial Activities
- Median hourly base pay of new hires ages 16-22 (May 2024): $16
- Change from May 2023: 6.7%
- Change from May 2019: 33.3%
6. Professional/Business Services
- Median hourly base pay of new hires ages 16-22 (May 2024): $15.80
- Change from May 2023: 5.3%
- Change from May 2019: 31.7%
