Breaking the $100,000 annual income barrier may not be the triumph it once was, but it still marks a solid milestone on many a financial journey.
Some U.S. cities have been welcoming households into the $100,000 club a lot more quickly than others. Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey for 2022 (the most recent available), GOBankingRates determined the 50 American cities doing so at the fastest clip.
No state has more of those top 50 cities than California. Based on the study, the Golden State has 19 of them, or 38% of the list. Arizona is a distant second with six, followed by Florida with five and Colorado with four. Nevada and Washington state each landed three cities on the list.
California also has the No. 1 city on the list, as well as seven of the top 10.
The rankings were determined by gathering figures for total households and the number of them earning $100,000 or more for the years 2022, 2021 and 2019, and then blending them to determine the fastest growth.
As for cities at the bottom of the list, Jackson, Mississippi, came in 200th, preceded by Stamford, Connecticut; Bridgeport, Connecticut; Birmingham, Alabama; and Tallahassee, Florida.
Here’s the top of the list, in reverse order and ending with the city adding $100,000 households at the fastest rate.

Methodology: For this study, GOBankingRates ranked cities based on how quickly the number of households earning over $100,000 has grown the most. GOBankingRates sourced the total number of households for all cities from the U.S. Census American Community Survey for 2022, the most recent available. For the 200 cities with the most households, multiple factors were sourced, including the percentage of households that earned over $100,000 for 2022, 2021 and 2019. The difference in the percentage of households earning over $100,000 was calculated over three- and one-year periods. The cities were sorted to show the largest increase in cities where households earn over $100,000. All data was collected on and is up to date as of June 25, 2024.
