There is a catch twenty-two that often presents itself when you are trying to make some extra money: namely, you have to invest in everything you need to work the part-time gigs, but you might not have the money to do that, particularly if you do not have a car.

If that sounds like your situation, the good news is that there are plenty of side hustles where no vehicle is necessary.

Here are five side gigs that don’t require a car.

Proofreader

  • Average Rate of Pay: $20-$25 per hour

Do you have a way with words and a great eye for catching errors? Proofreading is an excellent way to make some extra money without leaving your home.

Steven Lowell, career coach and reverse recruiter at Find My Profession, said, “We live in a global economy and the people building websites around the world make mistakes. Writers make mistakes. It helps to have that extra set of eyes with a strong knowledge [of] grammar.”

Copywriter

  • Average Rate of Pay: $20-$45 per hour

Lots of people can write, but very few can write well, tell a story, and be persuasive in their language. Do you have all these talents? Think about becoming a copywriter, where you can work from home.

“Gen AI may offer words to say, but still has not found the ability to capture the soul of a writer,” said Lowell. “The writers who are best at creating compelling content can find side gigs with companies looking to get a message across.”

Dog Walking Services

  • Average Rate of Pay: $20-$30 per hour per dog

If you know your neighborhood and who owns a dog, chances are your neighbor can become your client, according to Lowell.

“There are more than 65 million households in the US with at least one dog,” explained Lowell. “If your neighbor has a job or runs a company, there is a need for that dog to be walked or groomed. Those dog walking services can feel like a lifesaver.”

Tutoring

  • Average Rate of Pay: $20-$25 per hour

While the internet can offer a wealth of knowledge to students, they still need a guide and mentor to answer questions, troubleshoot, and work with them on fully understanding the concepts that they are learning. That’s where tutors can come in, and these days, usually online, meaning no transportation is required.

“My mother and myself used to tutor students, which took us to places like Colombia and Shanghai, but we mainly worked from home and had calls with students in high schools around the world,” described Lowell, calling this kind of work highly rewarding.

Voice Actor

  • Average Rate of Pay: $100-$150 per hour

Lowell acknowledged that this side gig requires an initial investment of setting up a home recording studio, but once a voice actor gets set up, they can attack gig websites offering voice-over work, eventually build up a client list, and turn the home recording side gig into a full-time business.

“In the meantime, that person can make between $100-$1,000, depending on the project requirements,” said Lowell.

Lowell pointed out that there are more than 60 million Americans engaged in freelance work, so many that there is even a union of freelancers called The Freelancers Union, which anyone working an additional side hustle should look into joining.

“Finding side gigs is truly a case of people using their imagination to be of service to someone in their community,” Lowell summed up.
