U.S. President Donald Trump is no stranger to wealth. In fact, he’s been surrounded by it his whole life and held on to it well into his senior years.
Given his background, it should come as no surprise that Trump is a whole lot richer than most people in his age group — or any age group.
Keep reading to learn how Trump’s wealth at age 79 compares with the average American in retirement.
Trump’s Net Worth
Trump has a net worth of about $6.6 billion as of Jan. 18, 2026, according to the latest Forbes estimate. That represents a big increase from his wealth even as recently as 2024, which Forbes pegged at $2.3 billion.
Since taking over the White House for a second term in January 2025, Trump’s wealth has nearly tripled. He’s made history by adding billions to his net worth while in office, mainly through cryptocurrency, according to Forbes.
Once a fierce critic of crypto, Trump has since evolved into a vocal and enthusiastic advocate of the asset — both as president and businessman. According to Forbes, his crypto ventures added an estimated $2 billion to his fortune in 10 months.
The Trump family launched two crypto meme coins just before Inauguration Day: $TRUMP and $MELANIA, The Week reported. Both “spiked and then crashed” in value, but the Trumps still earned about $100 million less than two weeks from trading fees alone.
Average Retiree Wealth
While Trump is awash in billions of dollars, the typical retired person in the U.S. has less than a half-million dollars in wealth.
According to a Federal Reserve analysis, the median net worth of Americans ages 65 to 74 was $409,900 as of 2022, the most recent data available. The median net worth for those 75 and older was $335,600.
More recently, Empower analyzed the net worth of people who used its Empower Personal Dashboard as of October 2025. Here’s a look at the net worth of U.S. seniors.
| Age by decade | Average net worth | Median net worth |
| 70s | $1,462,121 | $232,712 |
| 80s | $1,363,996 | $234,300 |
| 90s | $1,224,187 | $206,054 |
Why Is Trump So Much Richer?
You don’t need an economics degree to understand why Trump has amassed so much more wealth than the average retiree: He was born rich — and most people aren’t. His father, Fred, was a successful real estate developer in New York City.
According to a 2018 article from The New York Times, by the time Trump was 17, his father had given him part ownership in a 52-unit apartment building. Trump continued to receive millions from his father in the ensuing decades.
Trump also amassed wealth through his own investments, primarily in real estate holdings that included office towers, high-rise apartments, hotels, casinos, resorts and golf courses. He built additional wealth as a reality TV star in the 2000s.
