Looking for an affordable new car that won’t break the bank (or leave you stranded)?
Auto expert Chris Pyle from JustAnswer breaks down the shrinking list of new cars still under $20,000.
Nissan Versa: The Reliable Choice
“It has been in production for many years, all the kinks are worked out,” Pyle noted.
You’re looking at good gas mileage, decent family space and proven reliability. Nothing fancy, but it’ll get the job done for years to come.
Kia Forte: The Upscale Feel
Don’t let the price fool you.
“The interior is really nice on this model and the warranty is really good if purchased new,” Pyle explained. Think of it as the budget car that doesn’t feel budget.
Mitsubishi Mirage: The Mixed Bag
Here’s some honest talk from Pyle: While they’re good cars, he sees lots of repair issues.
But there’s a catch: “That can be because it is popular so there’s a larger pool of failures known about, or it can be that many high school and college kids get them as gifts but drive them poorly.”
The car might not be the problem.
Kia Soul: The Hidden Deal
“Sometimes you can find a base model that has been reduced a lot to move it off the lot,” Pyle revealed.
It’s perfect for small families with car seats, thanks to decent leg room and cargo space. Just one catch: “They are not common though because of their appearance — they are ugly, at least in my eyes,” the auto expert added.
The Bottom Line
Why so few choices on the list? Pyle explained that manufacturers struggle to make sub-$20,000 cars profitable while including all the tech features buyers want.
Plus, these budget-friendly rides often sell themselves; dealers don’t even need to advertise them. Just don’t expect to find one loaded with extras.
