Thinking about which Tesla to buy that will be able to drive for 20 years? Now factor in if those two decades are during your retirement, when you are on a fixed income and need to stretch your nest egg. There are a lot of factors to weigh when looking at electric vehicles, like price, space and value. However, the best Tesla models for retirees simply depend on their lifestyle and what they hope to get out of the car.

Nigel Tunnacliffe, co-founder and CEO of Coastline Academy (a driving school for all ages), said Tesla’s are a top choice for retirees. “There are also a number of high-end brands that offer consistent value, providing cars that are stylish and luxurious without compromising on reliability,” he said. “Tesla is one of those makers and, for that reason, has become an increasingly popular choice for retirees.”

Below are the top Tesla models that Tunnacliffe and other auto experts think would be the best picks for retirees.

2025 Model 3

  • Estimated MSRP: $44,130 to $56,630

Tunnacliffe recommended the Model 3 for retirees looking for consistency. “They are well-built, exceptionally reliable cars with robust safety features that will last far into the future. A used Model 3 was the first electric vehicle we bought for Coastline and its exceptional reliability has continued to provide ongoing value for us. I also personally own a used Model 3 and find that it still drives like new.”

Tunnacliffe added that it doesn’t necessarily have to be a 2025 Model 3. “This longevity and reliability has remained constant throughout the model’s different iterations, so a Model 3 from almost any year will make a great retirement vehicle.”

Co-founder of Claimsline, Andrew Franks, said, for a Tesla, the Model 3 is at a good price point and has a lot of great tech features. “As one of the most reasonably priced Tesla models, it is quite attractive to a significant portion of drivers. This model has state-of-the-art technology in it and is frequently upgraded with new software, which is a major requirement to remain relevant decades later.”

2024 Model Y

  • Estimated MSRP: $44,630 to $54,130

Tunnacliffe suggested the Model Y for its safety. “The 2024 Model Y is a highly reliable and safe vehicle that will last for decades,” he said. “Its extensive suite of safety features and large cabin space make it a very practical and versatile choice that is sure to deliver value for a wide range of drivers.”

He also highlighted the smooth ride, which is great for highway driving. The 2024 in particular has impressive tech features and gets great mileage.

2022 Model S

  • Starting price: $106,440 to $137,440

Tunnacliffe recommended the 2022 Model S for seniors who like long drives, as it gets higher-than-average charging distance. “2022 was an excellent year for the Model S, making a model from this year a particularly good option for retirees,” Tunnacliffe explained. “Its main selling point is its fantastic powertrain and long-distance battery, making it an exceptionally enjoyable car to drive in virtually any context.”

2025 Cybertruck

  • Starting price: $72,235 to $102,235

For the retiree who wants to splurge and make an entrance at the same time, John Ellmore, founding editor of Electric Car Guide, recommended the Cybertruck. He said it’s a flashy car with lasting power. “Its stainless-steel exoskeleton is tough. It’s resistant to corrosion,” he added. “Its tough design isn’t just for show; this truck is well-equipped to deal with rough terrains and heavy-duty tasks, but it’s still got a comfortable ride for city driving.”
