Do you want your car to last longer and run smoother? Performing regular maintenance will be key. Unfortunately, with so many different recommendations out there, it’s difficult to know what advice to follow.
For everything from oil changes to brake fluid changes, one car expert shared her recommendations on when these services should be done and why the timing is crucial for the health of your car.
Oil Changes
For decades, the rule of thumb was always “change your oil every 3,000 miles.” However, today’s cars don’t require changes as often. Most experts will tell you that if you’re using synthetic oil, you can go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between oil changes. Some cars can even go 10,000 miles. The key is to understand what your manufacturer recommends and follow that.
Neglecting this basic maintenance increases the risk of sludge buildup and engine wear. Oil changes are quick and can help protect your car’s engine over its life span.
“Oil changes are recommended every 5,000 [to] 7,500 miles,” said Renee Martin, auto expert at Way.com. “Delaying oil changes can cause the oil to break down and stops protecting your engine like it should. Skipping these small things almost always turns into bigger, more expensive problems later.”
Air Filters
Clean air is essential for your car’s engine to run efficiently. That’s why every car comes with air filters. They help prevent dirt and contaminants from getting into the engine and causing problems.
“Air filters should be replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles,” Martin said. “A clogged air filter makes your car work harder, wasting fuel and hurting performance.”
While your engine air filter may not seem like a big deal, dirty filters can reduce your fuel economy and make acceleration feel sluggish. This simple and affordable maintenance item will help keep your car running smoothly for longer.
Brake Fluid
Most people don’t think about brake fluid the same way as they do engine oil. However, it’s critical for keeping your car as safe as possible.
“Brake fluid absorbs moisture, which can cause it to lose stopping power,” Martin said. “I always tell people you should consider having it replaced every two years. Plus, since it can be done when you get your oil changed, it won’t cause you to make an extra trip to see a mechanic.”
When brake fluid absorbs moisture, your brakes’ performance is reduced, particularly in emergency situations. Old fluid can accelerate corrosion of your brake parts, resulting in expensive repairs.
Coolant
Common knowledge says that coolant prevents the car from overheating. However, it’s also important to avoid freezing in winter and corrosion in the cooling system. Many experts recommend changing your coolant every 30,000 to 50,000 miles, but Martin said you can do it every couple of years.
Neglecting coolant changes can lead to overheating, leaks and engine damage. Skipping this inexpensive maintenance can result in costly repairs that could have been avoided.
